🌏World Diabetes Day🌏
Today in our diabetic foot MDT clinic, I’m reminded why prevention—while essential—is simply not enough.
💔This week alone has been a stark reflection of the realities our patients face. An old friend, younger than me, has reached stage 5 renal failure and started dialysis. 💔We’ve supported patients making incredibly difficult decisions, including those refusing admission, and worked to personalise safe solutions while trying to prevent sepsis. 💔We’ve seen firsthand how major amputations affect not only physical health but mental wellbeing, identity, and hope. We have planned prophylactic and curative surgery for so many people to reduce their risk and promote healing of existing wounds.
❤️And in the middle of all that, we were hugged by a patient in tears—tears of relief and joy—because her wound has finally healed, and she can now go on to have the reconstructive surgery she’s been waiting for!
Our MDT is incredible. Their compassion, expertise, and relentless commitment change lives every day. But the broader system still has gaps. Prevention matters, empowerment matters—but they must be supported by timely access, integrated care, and the resources needed to intervene early and effectively.👣
Today, we celebrate the work our teams do⭐️ but refferal numbers are increasing and work forces and resources are not.
We recommit to pushing for more—more equity, more support, more coordinated care—so fewer people fall through the gaps.
Prevention is vital.🙌
Empowerment is essential.💪
But together, we must do more.💔
