✨ Acupuncture & Teenage Menstrual Health ✨

For many teenagers, the menstrual cycle can come with challenges — painful periods, heavy bleeding, irregular cycles, PMS, fatigue, mood changes, or headaches. These symptoms can affect school attendance, sport, sleep, and overall wellbeing.

Acupuncture offers a gentle, drug-free approach to supporting teenage menstrual health, working with the nervous and hormonal systems to help the body find balance.

Parents often seek acupuncture support for teens experiencing:
• Painful or heavy periods
• Irregular cycles
• PMS, mood swings, or anxiety around their cycle
• Headaches or migraines linked to menstruation
• Fatigue or low energy during periods

Acupuncture may help by improving circulation, easing muscle tension, supporting hormone regulation, and calming the stress response — all of which can influence menstrual symptoms. Treatments for teenagers are tailored to be age-appropriate, using fewer needles where appropriate and a calm, supportive approach to help teens feel safe and comfortable.

Supporting cycle health early can help set the foundation for lifelong wellbeing 💛

✨ How Acupuncture Can Support Teenagers ✨

As parents, we want to support our teenagers through a stage of life that can be physically demanding and emotionally complex. Academic pressure, social challenges, hormonal changes, and growing bodies can all show up as stress, poor sleep, headaches, or frequent tension.

Acupuncture offers a gentle, drug-free support option for teenagers, working with the nervous system to promote balance and resilience.

Parents often seek acupuncture support for teens experiencing:
• Anxiety, overwhelm, or emotional ups and downs
• Sleep difficulties and fatigue
• Headaches, migraines, or jaw tension
• Digestive discomfort
• Menstrual concerns and hormonal changes
• Sports injuries, growing pains, or posture-related tension

Treatments for teenagers are adapted to be gentle and age-appropriate, with fewer needles and shorter sessions. The focus is on helping the body regulate stress, improve sleep, and support overall wellbeing — all in a calm, supportive environment.

Supporting balance early can make a meaningful difference 💛

Acupuncture as a Pre-Birth Treatment ✨

In the final weeks of pregnancy, the body is doing a lot of behind-the-scenes work to prepare for birth. Pre-birth acupuncture is commonly used during this time to support the body’s natural readiness for labour — gently and holistically.

Pre-birth treatments are typically offered from around 36–37 weeks and may help to:
• Encourage relaxation and reduce stress
• Support optimal positioning of baby
• Prepare the cervix and pelvic tissues
• Promote efficient uterine function
• Support emotional calm and confidence before birth

Rather than inducing labour, pre-birth acupuncture focuses on preparation — helping the body work more smoothly once labour begins. Many people choose weekly sessions as part of their birth-preparation plan alongside midwifery care, movement, and rest.

Does bringing your child for acupuncture feel daunting/scary?

The biggest barrier to more children having acupuncture treatment is their fear that it will hurt or you as a parent being concerned about how this will be for your child. In this post I am going to try and give you an understanding of how we treat children (babies and teens) in the Blossom Tree Children’s Clinic and how we make the experience enjoyable and fun!

🌺 At the clinic one of the number one principles is children don't need to do anything they are not comfortable doing. We take things really slowly and try to make things Fun! For younger children we use toys and play and often insert “magic wands” with a spell! After the treatment smaller children get to choose a sticker from the magic box. For older children and teens we get to know them and build rapport.

🌺The acupuncture needles we use for children are ultra fine and so the sensation is much milder than that of adult acupuncture needles. We have many children who come to the clinic who have become very comfortable with acupuncture needles and even enjoy it when treatment is approached in the right way.

🌺 For some children needles aren’t tolerated and that’s ok. We still have plenty of ways in which we can treat a child who does not want needles including: Chinese Massage (tuina), moxibustion (burning of mugwort just above but not on the skin), laser and dietary therapy.

🌺Part of the treatment is always to give parents and children dietary guidelines based on the individual child and the seasons. Chinese dietary therapy has a very unique approach to diet that strives to PREVENT illness through a series of very practical principles.

Have you heard of Acupuncture for Labour induction?

It can be a stressful experience if your Pregnancy has gone past your due date and the hospital is putting on pressure for an induction. For some women who would like to avoid having to have a medical induction or are hoping for a home birth Acupuncture "Induction" can be a really good option to encourage the body in the right direction. As pregnancy reaches full term, the body goes through a complex hormonal and physical process to prepare for labour. Acupuncture is sometimes used in late pregnancy to support this natural process

Acupuncture for labour preparation may focus on:

• Encouraging relaxation and reducing stress hormones
• Supporting cervical readiness
• Promoting optimal uterine activity
• Improving circulation and nervous system balance

Research suggests that when the body is calm and well-supported, it may respond more effectively to its own labour signals. Many people choose acupuncture in the final weeks of pregnancy as part of a broader birth-preparation plan from around 37 weeks , but it can also be started when they are approaching or past their due date.
