You could play games that involve ‘s’ words, for example…
Snowman snack - pretend to make a snowman food with pretend play items and model words like ‘snow’, ‘scoop’, ‘stir’ and ‘snowman’

Provide opportunities for your child to communicate by offering them choices - and these can be linked to Christmas!

You could ask…
- Red bauble or green bauble?🔴🟢
- Should we sing Jingle Bells or Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer?🎶
- That’s Not my Santa or Dear Santa?📚

Make sure you hold each item choice in your hand if possible, get onto your child’s level and bring forward the item as you name it

Therapy toy of the week - spinning top!

Why do Speech and Language Therapists love using spinning tops?
Spinning tops encourage children to:

- Problem-solve as they may try to independently use the toys

- Request ‘help’ if they cannot work the toy and/or ‘more’ if they like the toy

- Use/build their anticipation skills as they wait for ‘go’ in ‘ready steady go’

- Hear modelled language during the activity e.g. “turn”, “spin” and “stop”

❗️Bilingualism ❗️

Did you know..?
- Bilingual children may know fewer words in each language BUT their total vocabulary is the same or better than children learning one language.
- The age of first words, two-word phrases and grammatical development for bilingual children happen within the same age range as children learning one language.
- Code switching (mixing words from both languages in one sentence) is typical for bilingual children.

Top Tip for boosting your child’s language!

Use your daily routine to support language development by:
- narrating/commenting on what’s happening using language at your child’s language level

For example, at bath time you could model “bath”, “quack quack”, “splash water”, “duck swimming under water”
