💬 We can learn to notice that inner self-talk that is often not so nice to us, and we don’t have to identify ourselves with it.

🧐 We can choose not to continue thinking certain thoughts or limiting beliefs if they are unhelpful or unkind.

☁️ We can instead acknowledge thoughts for what they are, ‘just thoughts’ and let them pass on by like leaves on a stream or clouds in the sky.

🕊️When you experience hypnotherapy you are given the opportunity to really ‘allow yourself’ to relax and let go. While the inner mind drifts and floats, and listens to calming and soothing words, it settles down and becomes quiet and still for a time. The body also sinks into a deeply comfortable and restful state. This message of safety allows the parasympathetic nervous system to regulate and restore healthy bodily function in the absence of stress hormone activation.

😴 In this day-dreamy place of calm and comfort, we are able to connect with our inner wisdom and perceive things with far more clarity. We can visualise or imagine situations with openness and optimism without triggering any reflexive survival response. This allows the amygdala to trust and let go of old, out-of-date, learned fears and thought patterns.

🤓 When we observe our unhelpful inner narrative from a place of calm detachment, we develop self awareness. We learn not to become so entangled in or absorbed by our own thoughts and feelings.

🏅Instead we learn to challenge our thoughts and reframe our fears. We can consider things from a different perspective, like seeing situations through a new lens. We don’t react and respond to our thoughts and emotions as quickly. We are able to stay within our reasoned mind and think rationally and logically. Allowing those unwanted, unhelpful thoughts to dissipate and float on by.

⭐️ A recent review from a mother of a young teenage girl who was struggling acutely with Emetophobia (Fear of Vomiting) and generalised anxiety about illness. She was unable to attend school when we first met. We met for six sessions.

⭐️ Coaching included education about fear & anxiety, the nervous system stress response and self regulation techniques, emotional processing, grounding techniques, thought awareness and distancing, reframing negative thinking. Hypnotherapy included working on negative past experiences, Emetophobia, Teenage Anxiety, Fear of Vomiting, The Aware Technique for Fear and Anxiety and Health Anxiety.

⭐️ She received a presentation folder and weekly printed handouts with topical info, tools and techniques and also info graphics, videos and links to articles to her mobile device as well as weekly MP3 recordings of her hypnotherapy sessions to continue using throughout the week.

⭐️ By the end of the sessions it was very visible that she was feeling much more relaxed and confident within herself and about the issues she had been struggling with. I was also really pleased to receive a text from mum a few weeks later to say that she was now back to school and able to fully participate again. 🙌

💁‍♀️LADIES...GRAB A CUPPA, LETS TALK ABOUT MENOPAUSE

🤗Ladies of a certain age or should I say decade and more.... The reason I'm here today as a therapist for Women's Health is due to my experience of perimenopause. I changed. They sometimes call it "The Change" don't they, well they are not wrong!

🎢I didn't know what was happening at first. All sorts of physical symptoms, aches and pains in joints, tension, headaches, menstrual changes, mood swings like being on a rollercoaster, disturbed sleep, itchy skin, even vertigo. I felt out of control, like I was not coping with things that I used to manage well. My usual coping strategies which were generally just push through, keep going and it will pass didn't work. It didn't pass. A duvet day wasn't enough. Alcohol became more regular to try to suppress the deep emotional feelings that kept bubbling to the surface. Crying for no reason, shouting the next. For those of you going through it, you know what I'm talking about.

🧑‍⚕️Finally a trip to see a thankfully, 'in the know' female doctor I was put on HRT. I was shocked but she recognised the myriad of symptoms. The difference was so fast. I had no idea how much of an integral role hormones play within our whole body. I just saw them as something that controls our reproductive organs. How wrong I was.

⚖️The swing in hormone levels we experience during the perimenopausal years, plays havoc with so many aspects of our health. Particularly our brain function. Our brain is covered with hormone receptors for Oestrogen and Progesterone. When Oestrogen levels fall or fluctuate, it can trigger migraines and headaches. It also affects neurotransmitters like Dopamine, Serotonin and Norepinephrine which can lead to difficulty with memory and concentration, mood swings, anxiety and changes in sleep. Nerve cell function is affected which can cause pins and needles or joint pain. Progesterone levels fall which normally acts as a mood stabiliser, calming the nervous system. Cortisol levels rise which can cause ulceration to the stomach lining and thinning of bones. Our stress hormone responses become dysregulated. Even though Oestrogen levels drop, if it becomes dominant in relation to Progesterone it can actually cause irritability, hot flushes and sleep disturbance. Testosterone levels also decline, which can cause a lack of libido, low energy, increased fatigue, irritability, anxiety, and brain fog.

😵‍💫Hormones rise and fall in peaks and troughs, so we feel better one minute and worse the next. Is it any wonder we feel so 'out of sorts' during this period of our lives!!

🤓I am a big advocate for HRT to try to replace and balance hormone levels, however some women can't take it and others may choose not to. There are plenty of lifestyle changes that can be made, good nutrition, regular exercise, stress management and emotional regulation tools to help.

🧑‍⚕️Some women are far more affected by hormonal changes than others. HRT needs monitoring and titrating according to your response, there is no 'one size fits all' dose. Don't be afraid to go back to your GP to alter your dosage or route of administration if you are still struggling. I was on quite a high dosage of Oestrogen yet on measuring my levels my GP was surprised how my levels were still quite low. We are all different and hormone levels are also changing as you age.

🩺 Interestingly there is currently a rise in women receiving a late diagnosis of ADHD because they, in particular, tend to be far more affected by hormone level drops, they are also prone to suffering post partum depression and PMT. In Perimenopause, women can find that their normal coping strategies or unconscious masking of inner struggles are no longer sufficient and ADHD is exposed by exacerbating the traits.

👩‍💼There are significant numbers of women who leave their work or reduce their hours during peri menopause due to the debilitating physical, cognitive and psychological symptoms. Some may have difficulty keeping up with their roles, this may lead to negative discrimination and can also affect career progression. The loss of experienced and talented women from work is resulting in a significant loss in productivity for the work force.

🌅In Hypnotherapy and Coaching, the focus is on relieving some of the challenging emotional highs and lows and building resilience to cope with the increased stress and anxiety of juggling a busy life during this difficult and changeable time. Learning ways to calm the nervous system, develop helpful daily routines for self care and nurturing to relieve symptoms and prevent burnout. Hypnotherapy provides deep relaxation and introduces stress management techniques and emotional regulation skills that will lower anxiety levels and negative thinking. It can also help with hot flushes.

I have a Facebook group for education and discussion about all things Menopause. It’s FREE to join and with lots of helpful info and tips!

🌿TAKE A MOMENT TO PAUSE FROM THIS BUSY WORLD.....🌳

😵‍💫"Our world has transformed from a place of scarcity to a place of overwhelming abundance: Drugs, Food, News, Gambling, Shopping, Gaming, Texting, Sexting, Facebooking, Instagramming, YouTubing, Tweeting . . . the increased variety and potency of highly rewarding stimuli today is staggering. The smartphone 📱is the modern-day hypodermic needle, delivering digital dopamine 24/7 for a wired generation. The more dopamine in the brain’s reward pathway, the more addictive the experience." Quoted from Dr Anna Lembke, Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgence.

🤨 But are we forgetting our real needs, beneath all the noise. Busy chasing Dopamine, distracting ourselves with compulsive consumption, in the pursuit of short lived highs.

🤔 We are currently facing a mental health epidemic. These types of avoidance or coping strategies only work in the short term and will often increase our suffering in the long term.

🤗 When we learn to reconnect with ourselves, we come out of our busy mind and ground back down within the body. By just allowing ourselves to Pause, Relax, Listen and Breath, everything can slow down and we bring our mind back into the present moment.

This exercise called ACE can help to anchor us when we become overwhelmed:

A- Acknowledge your thoughts and emotions instead of running away from them or struggling with them. Notice your inner world with curiosity. Feel any sensation or tension in your body. What does it mean? Name what you feel. "I feel angry", "I feel fear", “I feel lonely”. Dont judge them or try to change them.

C - Connect with your physical body while remaining aware of your thoughts and feelings. Breathe, stretch, become aware of your physical self and tune into your senses. Look around the room or your environment, notice the head and neck move. Press your feet into the floor, straighten the spine.

E - Engage with the world around you instead of being on auto pilot or all in your head. Get a sense of where you are and what is happening around you. Focus your attention on the activity you are doing. See what you see, Hear what you hear.

⭐️ Exercises like this are included in Hypnotherapy and coaching and can help you to overcome stress, anxiety and burnout.

☀️You will train not to let thoughts and feelings control you, to release the struggle, to detach and observe instead of responding with habitual, unhelpful behaviours.

✨You can experience clarity and perspective and the confidence to look towards the sort of life that brings you more joy and fulfilment.

🫶Contact me to book a consultation to see how therapy can help you get you back on track.

Booking ahead for In person Sessions Truro Cornwall or online sessions also available.

☀️ A little update! I’m doing well and the worst discomfort is done. I can make it outside now without too much swelling. I’m pretty slick on crutches! 😆

🍀 Making the most of this beautiful weather in the garden and reading a lovely little book called Ikigai about the Japanese belief that we all can find purpose in life. In Japan they believe that having a clearly defined Ikigai brings satisfaction, happiness and meaning to our lives. Japanese people are well known for their healthy diets and how active they remain way into later life, staying busy doing what they love. The island of Okinawa is a blue zone region, where a high number of people live well into their 100’s! They attribute this not just to their diet, but to a strong sense of community and having a sense of purpose.

🍱 They suffer fewer chronic illnesses like cancer, heart disease and inflammatory disorders. Women experience far more moderate symptoms during menopause which also happens far later in life.

🕊️Having time to sit quietly and ponder on my direction and purpose, and listen to my inner compass, is precious. I am such a strong believer that being constantly busy in a state of stress, over-working, going through the motions, feeling exhausted and lacking the energy to take part in fulfilling or meaningful activities, fuels both physical ill health and mental suffering. I believe it shortens our lives.

⚖️ Taking the time to understand yourself and your emotions is important. Not always running away from them being busy, suppressing them or creating distractions. Instead taking time once in a while to sit, observe what you feel and accept that’s what you feel. Emotions come and go just like the weather, we can’t control it, only observe it. When we try to ignore, fight, or run away from our feelings they will only persist and get stronger. When we give ourselves quiet moments of reflection, we can assess our values and our purpose and create ideas for the sort of life we want to be living. A life that is less stress inducing, more meaningful and creative, with happy connections to others.

🧭 When we know the direction we want to move towards, the things that bring us joy and contentment, then we can make moves towards that life we want to be living, not moves that drive us further away or stop us from being creative. WE are in the driving seat, but we need to have direction and then be brave enough to take positive action.

⛔️ Are you in a cycle of behaviours, thoughts or feelings that are not helping you? You always have a 'Choice Point' - To continue with unhelpful, away moves or take action with moves towards creating a happier life.

🌅 Hypnotherapy and coaching can help put you on that road towards a happier healthier life by helping you to unhook from negative patterns and anchor into a more positive and grounded state in the now.
