As you will have seen from my past posts, breast reduction surgery is truly life changing 😊. It not only addresses the heavy weight of large breasts that can cause backache, shoulder ache, neck ache and bra strap grooving but also transforms the appearance and confidence of patients who undergo this procedure such as the patient I’m showing here (as ever, a huge thank you 🙏 to her for letting me show her results)

I frequently get asked by black skinned patients to show more examples of my black patients & their results so they can understand how scars can be.

This patient is around six months after surgery & her scars are healing incredibly well. The vertical scar that you can see in the front of her breast will continue to fade over the next 1-2 years, and I think they will be almost imperceptible over time, and the scar around the ar**la is already excellent.

The reason black skinned patients might be more conscious about scarring is that overall there is a higher rate of problematic scarring, such as thickened scars, hypertrophic scars & keloid scars as well as pigmented scars (which resulting dark coloured scars) in Afro-Caribbean skin.

This is always a concern and should always be part of a discussion during the pre-surgery consultation. Ultimately, we never truly know and cannot reliably predict how someone will scar; however in my experience, when this sort of surgery is carried out carefully with as little tension on the skin as possible, by using a significant amount of internal shaping stitches to support the breast, problematic scarring is not something I see frequently.

In any breast reduction, the skin should not be used as a bra, & should be gently draped over the reshaped and lifted breasts after the volume reduction has been performed 👍

A good deep neck lift really lasts well!

In my opinion, the main challenge with post face and neck lift changes over time relates to changes to the skin.

When we look at someone’s progress over time after a and it is not recurrent sagging of the neck that occurs - that is really well maintained for years - but the skin surface that most shows the passage of time.

Therefore, I would encourage most people who are planning on facial rejuvenation surgery to consider their skin. Whether a session of or or using medical grade skin care such as , taking care of the skin will
prolong your result 👍👍

After pregnancy 🤰 and breastfeeding 🤱 the changes to my patient’s breasts had a significant impact on her confidence and sense of well-being - so much so, that it was difficult, if not impossible to for her to let her partner see, or touch her breasts 😢.

This impacted on their relationship, their intimacy and their family life, to the extent that she came to seek treatment with me.

I undertook breast augmentation using teardrop anatomical implants place partly under the muscle and have restored her shape, the volume, but most importantly, her confidence and sense of well-being.

This has now changed her life in ways she told me she could only have hoped for ☺️

It is never lost on me what a privilege it is to undertake the sort of surgery that I do, and how impactful it can be for every individual patient who comes to see me 😊🙏

is a fantastic city, the meeting of the Canadian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery was superb.

It was a privilege to be there when one of the world masters of plastic surgery, Dr Richard Warren, was presented with a lifetime achievement award. Listening to different points of view, challenging received wisdom, and learning about new nuances of plastic surgery is always incredibly enriching.

This is NOT “cosmetic” surgery - this is truly breast reconstruction….and the difference it can make to someone’s life is immeasurable 📏 🚀

Well… measures for how life changing a treatment can be do exist - a QUALY is a Quality of Life Year, and is a concept that can be used to determine the potential benefit of a treatment on an individual over their lifetime. The younger someone is when they have a meaningful intervention, such as this patient of mine who has had her breast asymmetry corrected, the greater the number of QUALYs they may obtain.

I have no doubt that the majority of my patients have a huge increase in their QUALYs after their surgery. Their treatments positively influence their life on a daily basis in countless ways and, as such, their situation should never be trivialised or dismissed (as it is all too often sadly).

Surgeons from around Europe and the Middle East came - we presented challenging clinical cases that produced intense debate and discussion and helped all of us broaden our minds.

Fascinating presentation from expert scientists Roger Wixtrom at the meeting in with a critical analysis of the scientific literature - for me, the most exciting part was the discussion about the protective effects of on the risk of developing - over a 45-year period, there may be a 31-39% reduction in breast cancer risk from having breast implants! Remarkable!

The mechanism appears to be related to an increase in the immune response within the breast that helps deal with potential future cancer development.

Some years ago questions were asked about breast implants and breast cancer develop - mainly whether implants might cause breast cancer. We now know that some implant surface types have an association with anaplastic large cell lymphoma (more on this to come too!) but to have historic and emerging evidence that breast cancer risk itself is likely to be reduced was not something anyone saw coming.

I will post on this again in the future as more research is done.

It’s never too late! ⏰

This lovely 64 year-old patient of mine became increasingly challenged by the functional issues from her large breasts.

She was unable to exercise or run 🏃‍♂️ and this was not only due to the weight ⚖️ of her breasts, but also the way they behaved, sitting low ⬇️ on her chest, and not being supported or controlled, despite expensive and sophisticated bras.

As part of her breast reduction I raised the position of the breast crease on her chest wall to gain more control over it shape, and one year later her life has been transformed!

Her backache, neckache and other physical symptoms have been resolved and she is she now has the freedom to exercise freely without any debilitating symptoms.

Breast reduction is a fantastic procedure that addresses physical psychological anaesthetic concerns all in one operation 😊👍
