Therapy isn’t always heavy. Sometimes it’s joy.

No one talks about the laughter.

The in-jokes. The silly metaphors that stick.

The relief when someone realises they can laugh and heal at the same time.

Those moments are medicine too.

Laughter doesn’t take away the pain but it makes carrying it feel possible.

Therapy is constantly balancing closeness and distance

Close enough to feel safe.
Distant enough to keep the work clean.

It’s an emotional calibration I do every hour.
Adjusting tone.
Adjusting pace.
Adjusting how much of myself to bring into the room.

Most people never see that balancing act.
But it’s always there.

The therapeutic journey is filled with powerful lessons that reshape how we see ourselves and the world.

These are just a few truths that emerge from the process of healing.

Which of these lessons resonates with you the most?

Not stepping in is sometimes the hardest part of the work.

I can see the pain.
I know what might help.
I feel the urge to soothe it away.

But growth doesn’t come from rescue.
It comes from staying present while someone finds their own footing.

That restraint takes practice.
And it takes trust.

Therapy changes me too.

People think we’re just giving.

But we’re also receiving, perspective, insight, resilience.

Every client teaches me something.

About patience. About pain. About courage.

I leave the room changed, every time.

This work is demanding. And it’s also deeply grounding.

Because alongside the pain,
I get to witness honesty, effort, humour, and resilience.

Clients show me what it looks like to keep going
even when things are uncertain.

That’s something I carry with me,
long after the session ends.

No one tells you how hard it is to end therapy.

We prepare clients for it.

We talk about closure, review progress, celebrate growth.

But for us?

It’s saying goodbye to someone we’ve sat with every week.

It’s letting go of stories we’ve carried.

It’s wondering how they’ll be.

It’s not just their ending.

It’s ours too.

When a client says, “I’ve never told anyone this,” stop and take it in.

That moment matters.

It’s not just a disclosure, it’s trust.

They’ve chosen me to carry something they couldn’t share with anyone else.

That’s not small. That’s not routine.

It’s easy to move on to the next question, the next silence, the next hour.

But pause.

Remember: being trusted like this is part of the work, and it’s also a privilege.

Carry it with care.

Don’t forget the weight of it.

I don’t change people’s lives. I walk alongside them while they do.

They’re the ones sitting with discomfort.
Trying new responses.
Noticing patterns they’ve avoided for years.

I guide. I reflect. I hold the frame.
But the courage is theirs.

That partnership is what makes this work meaningful.

Clients don’t move at the pace I see things. And that’s a good thing

I might notice the pattern early.
The connection between then and now.
The story repeating itself.

But therapy isn’t about how fast insight arrives.

It’s about how safely it lands.

Honouring their pace
is part of respecting their autonomy.

The new year doesn’t always arrive with motivation.

For some clients, January isn’t about goals.

It’s about survival.

Getting through another week.

Trying again after a hard December.

And part of my work, right now,
is reminding them they don’t need a reinvention.

They just need permission to begin where they are.

Sometimes a new year is a soft reset

not a fresh start.

Sometimes the progress I celebrate isn’t visible to anyone else.

The first time they use “I” instead of “you.”

The first time they say “I think I deserve better.”

The first time they laugh when they used to cry.

These moments are quiet but powerful.

And I never take them for granted.
