Sometimes I worry I’ve become the consultant in my own life.

I listen. I ask questions. I reflect. I model questions for clients.

Then I catch myself doing the same with my partner over something trivial.

Yes: this job teaches us so much.

But it also bleeds into the simplicity of being.

No one sees the version of me that sits in the car before driving home.

Not because I’m broken.
Not because I can’t cope.

But because I need a moment to switch from holding space for everyone else
to holding it for myself.

That pause is part of the work too.

Therapy can feel daunting, but it’s one of the safest spaces for growth and healing.

These are the words every therapist wants you to hear—because you deserve to feel supported, seen, and empowered.

Every therapist needs therapist friends.

The ones who get the weird notes you scribble.

Who know what “How are you?” really means after five back-to-backs.

Who send voice notes like supervision, but funnier.

You don’t need a network.

You need your people.

Find them. Keep them close.
It makes all the difference.

They don’t always notice how much they’ve changed.

But I do.

The way they sit differently.

The language they use now.

The strength they don’t realise they’ve built.

Progress is subtle.

Part of my job is holding it up to the light.

Sometimes I’m the first person they’ve ever trusted.

That’s not light.

That’s not casual.

It’s a responsibility I feel in my bones.

Therapy starts with trust.

Everything else follows.

Sometimes I know they’re pushing to see if I’ll still stay.

A sharp comment.

A silence that stretches.

A look that says, “Will you still be here if I show you this side of me?”

I don’t flinch.

Because staying is the point.

Some of the most important things never make it into the notes.

The sigh of relief.

The first time they laugh in session.

The way they look at the door and finally choose to stay.

You can’t capture that in bullet points.

But it’s what tells me therapy is working.

The hardest part isn’t answering questions. It’s asking them.

Because every question risks too much, too soon.

Or not enough.

Every question is a decision:

Will this open a door, or shut one?

Therapists don’t just listen.

We take risks, too.

Clients don’t always know how much I hold back.

There are things I could say.

Links I could make.

Connections I could point out.

But it’s not about how fast I see it.

It’s about how ready they are to.

Patience is part of the practice.

No one warned me how weird it feels to charge for care.

I believe in boundaries.
I believe in valuing the work.

But there’s still a part of me that feels off when I hit “send invoice.”

Because therapy is sacred.
And money feels… transactional.

Balancing the two?

That’s its own emotional labour no one talks about.

Not every ethical dilemma is dramatic.

It’s not always child protection or mandated reporting.

Sometimes it’s:
Do I accept that follow request?
Do I wave if I see a client at the supermarket?
Do I laugh at a joke that might be a defence?

It’s daily. Quiet. Constant.

And most people never realise how much we weigh it all.
