Every time a client thanks me, I’m thinking no, thank you.

For trusting me with your story.

For showing up even when it’s hard.

For letting me witness your change.

You let me see the resilience, humour, and bravery that remind me why this work matters.

We both grow from that.

Change doesn’t happen because of me it happens because we do the work together

They bring honesty.
I bring space.

They show up with fear.
I meet them with steadiness.

Therapy isn’t one person healing another.

It’s two people walking through uncertainty with purpose.

Every session is a fresh start even when my mind is still in the last one.

I could’ve had a heavy session at 9.
Tears at 10.
A breakthrough at 11.

Then I take a breath, open the door, and start again.

Clean slate. New energy. New person.

That reset is silent work.

But it’s part of the skill.

Empathy is connection but it’s also stamina.

It looks effortless.

But attuning, staying present, keeping your nervous system steady
that’s work.

It’s invisible, constant, and draining in ways words don’t capture.

Empathy isn’t just a trait.

It’s a practice.

I wish people knew how much courage it takes just to show up.

Sometimes they’re shaking.

Sometimes they say, “I almost cancelled.”

And then they stay anyway.

They speak, cry, sit, breathe and I get to witness that bravery.

Progress starts with turning up.

And that’s never small.

Boundaries

As a therapist I won’t:

Let every client’s crisis become my crisis
Answer emails at midnight
Neglect my weekends for extra charts

I will:

Close my laptop at 6 pm
Turn off notifications on Sundays
Protect the space I need to recharge

After a day of listening deeply, sometimes I struggle to listen at all.

Friends talk and my mind drifts.

Not because I don’t care but because I’ve been on all day.

I’m still learning how to switch off the clinical ear

and just be present as me.

Listening at work and listening in life

Most sessions aren’t breakthroughs. They’re maintenance

No dramatic moments.
No life-changing insight.
Just slow, steady work.

And that’s what real change looks like
the boring, consistent, safe rhythm of showing up and staying.

It doesn’t go viral.
But it works.

Sometimes I worry I’ve become the consultant in my own life.

I listen. I ask questions. I reflect. I model questions for clients.

Then I catch myself doing the same with my partner over something trivial.

Yes: this job teaches us so much.

But it also bleeds into the simplicity of being.

No one sees the version of me that sits in the car before driving home.

Not because I’m broken.
Not because I can’t cope.

But because I need a moment to switch from holding space for everyone else
to holding it for myself.

That pause is part of the work too.

Therapy can feel daunting, but it’s one of the safest spaces for growth and healing.

These are the words every therapist wants you to hear—because you deserve to feel supported, seen, and empowered.

Every therapist needs therapist friends.

The ones who get the weird notes you scribble.

Who know what “How are you?” really means after five back-to-backs.

Who send voice notes like supervision, but funnier.

You don’t need a network.

You need your people.

Find them. Keep them close.
It makes all the difference.
