“You’re lucky to have survived your stroke—you still need surgery on the back of your neck.”Those were the first words a member of staff said to me, just minutes after I’d arrived. Fear gripped me. I couldn’t stop wondering what other grisly, stroke-related surprises might be waiting for me. I felt utterly vulnerable. Only minutes earlier, before the stroke struck, I had been healthy, strong, and flexible for my age—perhaps that’s why I’m still here to tell this tale....

It was strange being out of the ward, going down in a lift on a trolley with two ambulance men. Then, outside, the wintry conditions hit me. It was a late January afternoon, dark and icy cold- Boy, did the cold hit me. Inside the ambulance, it was freezing cold, although I was huddled under a mound of blankets. I had company: a little old lady in a wheelchair; she stared straight ahead throughout the journey and was terribly confused when the ambulance men escorted her back to her nursing home....

Stroke story 19 I received a round of applause as ambulance men wheeled me on a trolley out of the stroke ward. I was being transferred to Hollywell Rehabilitation Centre, at last! I waved like a returning football legend to the stadium where he had once thrilled the crowds. It was emotional! I had acclimatised to the ward’s jungle heat, having resided as a patient in the stroke unit for a month....

A middle-aged, Mediterranean-looking female consultant came to my hospital bed, accompanied by junior doctors/medical students every morning at 9 am. ‘Mr Puzey, there isn’t anything we can do for you here; it’s down to physiotherapy from her on in.’ She smiled at me reassuringly. ‘You are on the waiting list to go to the Hollywell rehabilitation clinic. We are waiting for a bed to become vacant.’...

Here I am in the stroke ward at Watford Hospital. My bed stands opposite the big fella’s universe-sized bed. He's lying flat out so I can only see his chubby hands feeding his mouth from grub laid on his picnic table-sized chest by, ‘Me love you long time.’ I called him ‘scrambled eggs’ because his body was spread all over the huge bed....

When I was in the hospital recovering from my stroke, I deployed a visualisation from my book 'Uplifting Lyrics.' It worked a treat. I gently unfurl the red petals of my heart, inviting the warm sun's embrace. (Visualise your heart as a collection of serene, red-petalled segments. Feel the soothing energy of healing entering the 4th chakra.)VID I am as happy as a lioness playing with her cubs in the dry, scorching heat of the Serengeti....
