It’s not the glass ceiling that’s holding mothers back.
🛑 It’s having to say no to a promotion because of the load they are carrying at home.
🛑 It’s not putting themselves forward for a new job because she thinks it’s selfish to want more for herself and worries her kids will suffer if she isn’t constantly available.
🛑 It’s stepping down from a executive role because the demands of the job mean they’re working evenings and weekends and are completely burnt out.
🛑 It’s wanting to take a new role which includes international travel but her mother-in-law asks ‘but what about the children’ so she declines the offer.
This is known as the maternal wall and mothers are more likely to hit this way before they even touch the ‘glass ceiling’.
In episode 10 of The Mothers’ Hood Podcast, Tamsin Broster opens up about her experience of hitting the maternal wall after the birth of her second child.
Listen as she recounts her story of stepping away from a 20-year civil service career to reclaim her identity, rebuild her confidence and rewrite what success means not just as a mother but as a woman navigating loss, IVF, leadership, and the complexity of modern motherhood.
Tamsin is a feminist visibility and confidence coach, former Ministry of Defence leader, mother of two and all-round powerhouse. I know you’ll love this one.
It’s on the usual podcast platforms now.
P.s. Can I ask a favour, please? Leaving a review on Apple or Spotify means more mothers get to hear the podcast and we’re not gatekeeping over here!
