This is a wonderful memory from WWII, from another client of ours. These memories and stories really are precious.

Lest we forget 💜 ❤️

My Dad was in the army, and I spent time staying with my grandparents. At grandmas they had a very long garden at the bottom of the garden. They had dug out a bunker and we would all go down, including all the neighbours, and wait for all clear
My Auntie was Single and refused to walk down to the bunker when the sirens went off, so she would just throw herself into the vegetable patch. The lake was drained at the bottom of my grandparents' garden in order for the enemy plane not to have a landmark.

Everywhere would be in darkness in order not to show light; ARP wardens would be patrolling the streets to keep everyone safe.

ID cards were blue for children, fawn for adults. The military would check these to buy the food, even if it was for the children.
When my dad came home, I would ask him if we could walk through the Royal Military Academy, because he was an officer, everyone had to salute him, and it made me feel special and proud of him.

Lest We Forget- So we should never forget 🎖️

On this memorable day, we have an incredible story from one of our Clients.

In our client’s home is a remarkable mural painted by Rex Whistler during World War II. At the time, Whistler was serving as a tank commander. Each evening, while stationed at the Officers’ Club and waiting to cross the Channel for the D-Day invasion—delayed by storms—he worked on this mural, adding to it night after night.

The house itself was used as accommodation for officers during the war, and over the years, it welcomed notable visitors, including Princess Margaret. Rex would often visit the local pub and then return to the Officers’ accommodation to continue adding to the mural, making it a living piece of art during those tense days.

On D-Day, Whistler finally crossed the Channel, carrying his artist’s materials in a steel box welded to his tank. Tragically, he was killed in action just two to three days later. This mural stands as his final work of art—a poignant reminder of his talent and sacrifice.
Rex’s brother later requested that the mural be conserved, and today, Our Client still proudly keeps this extraordinary piece in his home.

We recently spoke with our client about the mural, its wartime history, and the significance of Remembrance Day—a moment to reflect on the courage and creativity that endured even in the darkest times.
