👩‍⚖️ Meet Sarah Newton – Chair of the Health & Safety Executive

With over 30 years’ experience in strategic planning, leadership and change management, Sarah brings deep insight and diplomacy to her role as Chair of the Board at the Health & Safety Executive.

Her career spans the business, voluntary and governmental sectors, and she’s known for forging powerful partnerships between diverse people and organisations to drive lasting change. Until March 2024, she served as a Non-Executive Director at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, contributing her expertise to Cornwall’s healthcare landscape.

🗳️ From 2010–2019, Sarah was an MP, serving on the Science and Technology Select Committee before being appointed Minister at both the Home Office and the Department for Work and Pensions. While at the Home Office, she led transformative work tackling modern slavery, domestic abuse, and human trafficking, and later oversaw the Health and Work unit — collaborating with the HSE in shaping national policy.

Before entering Parliament, Sarah held senior roles as Director of the International Longevity Centre – UK, Age Concern England, and American Express Europe. She was also elected Councillor for the London Borough of Merton.

A leader with vision, compassion and a sharp strategic mind, Sarah continues to champion safer, healthier workplaces across the UK.

Sarah will be with us on 14 October for our Working Well Conference and Awards event at Royal Cornwall Showground along with a whole host of other inspiring speakers.

Together, they’ll be exploring how we can champion health and wellbeing in workplaces across Cornwall and beyond.

💡 Whether you're an employer passionate about staff wellbeing or looking to make meaningful changes in your organisation — this event is for you.

Could you be a catalyst for healthier lives in Cornwall?

We're looking for an inspirational new Chair to lead our Board into its next chapter.

With a legacy rooted in the founding of Cornwall’s first private hospital, we've since invested over £10 million in improving the health and wellbeing of the people of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly - from pioneering school-based health and wellbeing centres for young people to funding innovative community health projects and responding swiftly to crises like the cost-of-living emergency, we are deeply rooted in the communities we serve.

As our new Chair, you’ll:

✅ Provide strategic leadership, ensuring excellent governance and clarity of purpose.
✅ Champion our mission to promote health and prevent sickness across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
✅ Guide a talented and committed Board of Trustees in allocating our resources wisely and ambitiously.
✅ Represent the charity externally, building relationships with partners, stakeholders and beneficiaries.
✅ Foster an inclusive, high-performing Board culture

We're looking for someone with:

🔹 Experience as a Chair, senior trustee, or governance leader
🔹 A strong connection to Cornwall and its communities
🔹 Strategic vision, sound judgement, and inclusive leadership

This is a rare opportunity to make a lasting impact on the health landscape of Cornwall.

🎤 Meet Steve Barnard — men’s mental health advocate and Talk Club captain — joining us at our Working Well event on 14 October at the Royal Cornwall Showground!

Steve’s heartfelt mission with Talk Club is simple yet powerful: helping men open up, connect, and support each other in safe, stigma-free spaces. His work is saving lives — and inspiring change across communities.

🧠 “I believe in the power of community support and connection.”
Talk Club is a multi-award-winning charity offering talking groups, therapy, exercise, and workplace wellbeing support — and Steve’s at the heart of it.

🚶‍♂️ Outside of Talk Club, Steve’s a proud husband, father, and music lover with a soft spot for classic cars and outdoor adventures. This September, he’ll tackle Ben Nevis — the final peak on his UK three peaks journey — another milestone in his role as both caregiver and changemaker.
