With demand soaring for ADHD assessments across the UK, and the BBC reporting on ADHD services closing waitlists for NHS patients, Sophie Campbell, our Deputy Head of Neurodiversity and Disability, shared her insight for employers:
“We know that delays in accessing diagnostic services for conditions such as ADHD and autism can severely impact mental health, increasing frustration, anxiety and isolation, which can impact individuals both at work and in their personal lives.
There has been a significant increase in demand for our diagnostic services. As occupational health providers, as part of our diagnostic assessment process, we also include workplace adjustment recommendations in our reports, offer post-diagnostic support and titration pathways, directly improving the day-to-day lives of individuals.
Clarity through a formal diagnosis can be transformative for many, providing a deeper understanding of individual needs, past experiences and enabling tailored support. However, for some, direct support should be accessible and beneficial even without a formal diagnosis. Employers can play a vital role in helping neurodivergent employees achieve quicker, positive outcomes by using occupational health to facilitate diagnostic services and/or provide support through workplace needs assessments or coaching. Taking this proactive approach not only helps individuals thrive both personally and professionally, but also contributes to healthier, more supported, and engaged teams.”
