The Nevada desert tested every limit of speed and spirit.

Despite the challenges, every moment at the World Human Powered Vehicle Speed Week brought lessons in teamwork, problem-solving, and perseverance.

This post is a summary of the week, capturing the endurance, innovation, and engineering brilliance that powered the journey.

The record wasn’t broken this time but that doesn’t matter. The true achievement lies in the adventure itself: showing up, pushing boundaries, and proving that perseverance and teamwork always move us forward.

Karen Darke continues to inspire us all reminding us that true innovation lies not in the result, but in the mindset of moving mind over matter.

Paralympic champion Karen Darke MBE, who set the women’s hand-cycle world record at 46.54 mph in 2018, is back with the University of Liverpool’s ARION8 team, chasing the historic 50 mph mark.

Day 1 & 2 – Nevada Desert
The World Human Powered Speed Challenge is never easy.

Day 1: fierce winds and technical setbacks—Ken couldn’t finish his run and Karen topped out at 24.8 mph.

Day 2: conditions improved; Karen surged to 38.97 mph (wind too high for a legal run) while teammate Ken clocked a legal 43.17 mph.

… did the desert give up a new record on day 3 & 4?......stayed tuned!
