‘Be still, and know that I am God…’ We can easily think this is a sweet, romantic line in Scripture, but this ‘being still business’, it’s so much more than that. I see it as a battle strategy, a place of re-posturing and repositioning oneself in the midst of the war for our mind. Being still is where the fight takes place in quietness and confidence. It’s where lies are dispelled by truth, and faith replaces fear.
The phrase ‘Be still’ is set within a Psalm that is full of calamity and chaos: mountains falling into the sea, the earth quaking, kingdoms falling, desolations on the earth, God causing wars to cease, and then the ‘Be still’, the practise of recognising God and who He is. It’s in the place of being still that we’re giving God our mind, our attention, and ultimately our love. We’re waiting, breathing, listening, allowing the Spirit to reorder our thoughts and align them with His truth.
