Tomorrow is International Day of the Midwife and this year's theme is Follow the Data: Invest in Midwives. Coinciding with the launch of the State of the World's Midwifery Report 2021, this year explores the latest evidence on the critical importance of investing in quality midwifery care.

Led by this data, the Invest in Midwives campaign, headed by the International Confederation of Midwives, aims to remove the barriers preventing midwives and maternity systems from achieving their full potential.

There is a global shortage of midwives and it's costing lives. We're standing with and calling for midwives, women, birthing people, partners, families and midwifery advocates to come together. It is time to hold governments and policymakers accountable for following the data and investing in midwives.

Tomorrow we will share statistics with you from the 2021 report that evidence the vital role midwives play. But today, we'd like you to reflect on the barriers you may face - be them personal, organisational or systemic. What are the barriers? How do they affect your life, work and practise? How can you be supported to overcome these barriers?
