It was great to have so many of the Heads Up Team together yesterday for Tier 2 ASD training. We were joined by two of our colleagues at Ability Case Management and one of our clients who wanted to gain some more knowledge.

Thanks to Lindsey at Autizma for an informative session!

Did you know...

Mandatory Training by Law (UK, since July 2022)
Under the Health and Care Act 2022, all staff at registered health and social care providers in England must receive autism and learning disability training appropriate to their role—including clinical and non-clinical staff
Higher Prevalence of Autism in CP
Individuals with cerebral palsy have a notably higher likelihood of also having autism. One study found that 6.9% of children with CP had co-occurring ASD—considerably higher than the ~2.8% prevalence in the general population.
Two-Tier Training Structure (this is a tier 2 traning course)

Tier 1: General awareness for all staff

Tier 2: For those directly providing care to autistic or learning-disabled individuals

Training Gaps Remain

Despite requirements, studies show that fewer than one-third (29%) of health and social care professionals had received even basic post-qualifying autism awareness training (Level 1). More intensive training (Levels 2 or 3) was provided to just 10% (HSC staff).

Benefits of Training for Care Staff
Autism training for care staff builds confidence, empathy, and practical communication tools—such as visual schedules and sensory strategies. This leads to improved job satisfaction, engagement, and lower staff burnout.

By completing this training, staff can contribute to more inclusive and supportive environments across schools, clinics, and other healthcare services.
