Want some Antioxidants? Berries are loaded with them. ⁣
Antioxidants help keep free radicals under control.⁣ Free radicals are unstable molecules that occur as a normal by-product of metabolism. It's important to have a small amount of free radicals in your body to help defend against bacteria and viruses. Berries are a great source of antioxidants, such as anthocyanins, ellagic acid and resveratrol. In addition to protecting your cells, these plant compounds may reduce the risk of disease.

Studies have shown that blueberries, blackberries and raspberries have the highest antioxidant activity of commonly consumed fruits, next to pomegranates.

One study in healthy men found that consuming a single, 10-ounce (300-gram) portion of blueberries helped protect their DNA against free radical damage.

Some genes have a more significant impact than others, such as one gene very strongly associated to lactose tolerance. This result can tell you if you are genetically intolerant to lactose-containing products, such as cow’s milk and cheese.
Another good example is a gene, which is associated with a higher risk of obesity and which can give those with this particular genetic marker cravings for fatty foods and the ability to store fat more efficiently! This was hugely beneficial in early humans when food was scare, but not at all so in the modern world when most of us have an abundance of food on offer!

🌴Coconuts are highly nutritious, rich in fibre, and packed with essential vitamins and minerals🌴
From eating them to drinking them and using the oil in cooking and beauty regimes, coconuts have become loved with health and wellbeing followers the world over.
Do you ❤️ them?
The water in young coconuts is one of the highest sources of electrolytes. Electrolytes are responsible for keeping the body properly hydrated so the muscles and nerves can function appropriately. Coconut water is also low in calories, carbohydrates, and sugars, and almost completely fat-free.
In addition, it is high in ascorbic acid, B vitamins, and proteins. Furthermore, the soft meat, or flesh, inside the coconut helps to restore oxidative tissue damage and contains a source of healthy fats, proteins, and various vitamins and minerals.⁣

Chlorella is a type of algae that grows in fresh water. Chlorella benefits you by helping to regulate hormones, helping with metabolism, improving circulation and promoting higher levels of energy.
It also helps to reduce weight and body fat and removes stored toxins.⁣

As our bodies lose weight, toxins are released and can be reabsorbed. It is important to flush these toxins out of our system as quickly as possible. ⁣

What’s your favourite nut?
Hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews, almonds, pecans - lots of variety to choose from!
Nuts are often described as a “superfood”, and they are a great source of plant protein.
They are also rich in monounsaturated fats, which may be a factor in reducing the risk of heart disease.
How to include them?
Add a handful to your porridge, yogurt, or have as a snack. They’re also a great accompaniment to summer salads.
But remember nuts are calorie dense, so limit to a small handful (approximately 25g), and enjoy as part of a balanced diet.

Having a good mix of vegetables is an important part of healthy eating to provide a source of nutrients, including potassium, fibre, folate (folic acid) and vitamins A, E and C.

Potassium may help to maintain healthy blood pressure. Dietary fibre from vegetables helps reduce blood cholesterol levels and may lower risk of heart disease. Folate (folic acid) helps the body form healthy red blood cells.

Make sure you include some superfoods too; broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, kale, cauliflower, maca and watercress all provide additional health benefits.

Did you know that grapefruit has more water than almost any other fruit?

It is 92% water, and its one of our favourite foods here at DNA Plan to help keep us hydrated.

Another benefit of this fabulous fruit is that it may help lower LDL cholesterol, aka the “bad” cholesterol, by as much as 15.5%, according to a 2006 study.

Another study found that adding one grapefruit a day lowered both cholesterol levels and triglycerides, by as much as 27%.

And, did you know, that pink and red grapefruit has a little extra benefit compared to other coloured grapefruit? They have a higher antioxidant level, specifically beta carotene, and lycopene. Lycopene is a carotenoid, and we know that eating diets rich in carotenoids may help lower the risk of heart disease and some cancers.

Plenty of great reasons to choose pink grapefruit for breakfast or a snack!

Our gut microbiome is involved in most of the body’s biological processes, such as making vitamins, aiding the digestion process, working with our hormones, immune system and nervous system. It also provides a fantastic insight into our metabolism and nutritional needs.

Unfortunately if we are constantly eating processed foods and ingesting toxins we are damaging the DNA of our cells. By eating a variety of foods rich in different species of bacteria, we can promote a healthy and balanced microbiome.
So, we need to include prebiotic foods and probiotic foods.

Lets look at prebiotics foods first - these include foods such as apples, asparagus, garlic, leeks, and pulses.

And, probiotic foods include natural of Greek yogurt, fermented miso, and sauerkraut for example.

When we focus on optimising our gut health we really do reap the rewards including optimum health and weight loss.

Oysters are part of the shellfish family. Their benefits include being high in protein in a small, low-calorie serving, and a variety of minerals and B vitamins.

These molluscs are less contaminated by heavy metals than other varieties of seafood, so it’s safe to eat them several times a week.

Oysters, both raw and cooked, supply a variety of B vitamins, most notably vitamin B12. B vitamins are water soluble, which means your body can’t store them and you need to get them regularly through food. Working in tandem with folate and vitamin B6, vitamin B12 helps regulate levels of homocysteine in the blood, a compound that may elevate risk for heart disease.

This nutrient also plays a vital role in brain health and preventing cognitive decline as you grow older. Getting more than the DV for B12 is especially important when you’re over 50, because absorption of B12 decreases with age.

Oysters, mussels, crab, clams, shrimps, scallops - what's your favourite shellfish recipe ?
