It's a perfect day for hot chocolate! ๐Ÿ’œโ„๏ธ
Try this cooling, calming breath with your treat.

Another in our series of calming strategies you can print off and use at home or school.

Hot Chocolate Breathing is a simple way to help a child slow their breathing when theyโ€™re feeling worried, overwhelmed, or full of big feelings. It works by gently switching the body into โ€œsafe and settledโ€ mode, so the brain can think more clearly again. Try it in calm moments first, then itโ€™ll feel familiar when emotions run high.

This is a wonderful essay about emotional regulation, thanks to EmotionAll with Pauline Lawson! ๐Ÿ’œ

Regulation is not a place!!

Can we please stop asking kids to name a place they feel calm and calling that emotional regulation!!!!

Regulation is not about being calm.
It is about being able to manage emotions and actions to suit the situation you are in.

Calm is not the gold standard.

Excited is allowed, frustrated is allowed, as is angry.
Joy, disappointment, nervousness, determination, and overwhelm are all allowed too.

What matters is not what a kid feels, but what they do with it.

When we constantly teach kids that calm is the goal, we quietly teach something else.
๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป
That other emotions are wrong.
That big feelings should be suppressed.
That being โ€˜regulatedโ€™ means being good, quiet, compliant, and easy to manage.

THIS is NOT regulation.
THIS is emotional shutdown with better branding.

Healthy regulation is learning how to work with emotions, not eliminate them.

It is all about understanding why emotions show up, what they are trying to do, and how to respond in ways that are safe, helpful, and respectful.

Some actions linked to strong emotions are allowed too.

Movement, raised voices, needing space, expressing anger without hurting.
And expressing frustration without shame.

This is why kids need the โ€˜how and the whyโ€™! โ˜บ๏ธ

The neuroscience of emotionsโ˜‘๏ธ
How the nervous system worksโ˜‘๏ธ
Why the body reacts before the thinking brain catches upโ˜‘๏ธ
The skills that help kids ride emotional waves rather than bottle them upโ˜‘๏ธ

Too many programmes, apps, and books are still pushing compliance disguised as regulation.
These are rooted in an outdated โ€˜be seen and not heardโ€™ mindset โ€ฆ even when the language sounds modern and caring.

The result โ€ฆ

Kids who hold emotions in.
Kids who believe strong feelings make them bad.
Kids who look calm on the outside and overwhelmed on the inside.

This really is not emotional health.

We do not need more tools that teach kids to suppress themselves.
We need education that builds real regulation skills.
Skills that allow kids to feel fully, respond wisely, and grow into emotionally capable humans.

Regulation is not about being calm.
It is about being human, with skills.

And kids really do deserve better than compliance dressed up as wellbeing.

When a child is overwhelmed, what theyโ€™re experiencing isnโ€™t misbehaviour. Itโ€™s a nervous system under strain.

In moments of distress, many children arenโ€™t able to step away, calm down, or think things through on their own. Their brain is in protection mode, not learning mode. Asking for distance, silence, or independence in those moments can sometimes add to the fear rather than reduce it.

What helps most is an anchor.
A calm adult presence.
A steady voice.
Predictable reassurance.

Co-regulation is not about fixing feelings or making them disappear. Itโ€™s about lending your regulated nervous system until theirs can settle again. When we stay close, grounded, and emotionally available, we send a powerful message: you are safe, even when things feel hard inside.

Over time, these moments build trust. They teach children that big emotions donโ€™t push people away, and that support is available without judgement. From that place of safety, skills like self-regulation, problem-solving, and reflection can grow.

Connection doesnโ€™t mean permissiveness. It means understanding that regulation comes before reasoning, and relationship comes before repair.

Be the anchor.
The calm in the storm.
The steady presence they can lean on while they learn how to steady themselves.

Relax Kids - Amy

Relax Kids helps children manage stress, anxiety and difficult feelings whilst boosting self-esteem, confidence and improving sleep. Relax Kids classes are structured around a unique 7-step method to teach relaxation: Play - Move - Stretch - Feel - Breathe -Believe - Relax.

From January, 2020:

Our family has moved away from the lovely Linlithgow after 22 very happy years there. My husband and I have resettled in Fife, near to his work and close to the seaside (sooooo relaxing!!). Thank you to all who wished us farewell (for now) and to those who have welcomed us in our new home. We chose a bit of a project, an older flat in need of some TLC. Iโ€™ll be dividing my time between managing the changes and continuing my Relax Kids business. It doesnโ€™t feel like โ€˜workโ€™ - I love each and every child, family, and group that I meet, and I adore their open hearts and minds when learning about themselves and their bodyโ€™s need for peace and calm at some point every day.

I can offer in-school sessions for class groups, nurture groups, after-school groups, or lunchtime sessions. I especially enjoy a busy, fun-filled day introducing relaxation to a school during Health and Wellbeing Week! Contact me for a visit to discuss ideas, costs, and to see what I can provide for your school.
