This month marks 11 years of me being a midwife 🥹✨

Back when I was 20, myself, Rob and my 18 month old, Ayva, moved to Cardiff for me to start my Midwifery degree. My home was Gloucester so I was away from my parent’s support and Rob and I hadn’t been together for very long.

It was a big leap and a huge move not just for me but for Ayva and Rob too. A Midwifery degree also isn’t quite the same as many other degrees. There isn’t long summers off and short day lectures. When you’re in for theory you are in Monday- Friday 9-5. When you are on placement you work full term, if your mentor did nights you did too.

Actually qualifying as a Midwife was one of the proudest moments of my life. I broke my arm during university so missed 6 weeks of placement, I was pregnant with my second baby too and missed time for hyperemesis, hours that I had to catch up on to qualify. We moved back to Gloucester as well so that we could be closer to family support, meaning that I had a commute. So it was generally quite a chaotic few years.

Maybe the struggle I had to qualify means that each day I work as a Midwife I feel so grateful that I get to call this career my job. Maybe it was my love for midwifery that got me through the struggles in the first place. Either way, 11 years later I still feel so grateful to be able to call myself a Midwife.
