MY JOURNEY TO MINDFULNESS // I often think about why am I so passionate about wanting to share simple mindfulness tools and skills with people and specifically younger people. It is because I know first hand, how transformational having these skills can be for coping with modern day life and I wonder how my life might have been if I had found these skills earlier.

I experienced a serious life event 11 years ago which left me lucky to be able to walk. Not sure how I got there but living a life full of stress and burnout definitely was the main contributing factor. At this time, I took a 8 week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction course (MBSR) which helped me bed in my mindfulness practice. Since this time, I have had a regular meditation practice and meditation practice.

Breath work, grounding, yoga & mindful movement, a quick walk in nature, hugging a tree, grounding myself, meditating, being present, practicing active listening or mindful eating have all helped me stay present and be in the discomfort and then come out of the other side.

I found the Mindfulness NOW course last year and it appealed as it has taken a lot of the fundamental elements of the globally known MBSR course and combined the MBCT as well as Nick Cooke adding his own learnings to develop a really practical and approachable course that is suitable for all. I loved my MBSR course but I did see a lot of my fellow students really struggle with being able to commit to the amount of practice that was expected of them. Many people struggled to find the time when they had children especially. So this is where I think Mindfulness NOW is perfect for everyone.

It’s not too late to sign up to my free taster session on Tuesday 7pm or if you can’t make this day/time - do reach out via DM or by email sarah@arboricoaching.co.uk and we can plan a free 30 min chat so we can see how learning these simple and quick mindfulness tools could be really useful for your own toolkit to cope with life.

WHAT IS MINDFULNESS? // This is a very common question that I get asked a lot. Simply put, mindfulness is a way of being and living your life that can be said to be a radical act of love to ourselves. With the growth of technology and increased connectively in modern day times, most humans are connected a lot of the time, but one can question if they are in touch with themselves, within their inner landscape of their own lives – their own mind and body.

As a society, most of us are constantly in the ‘doing mode’ but we are often not in the ‘being mode’. Mindfulness invites us to just ‘be in the present moment’ in all aspects of our life and not on automatic pilot, whether that be in a more formal mindfulness practice like within a seated or guided meditation or an informal practice where you are practicing being present in your life – whether being present while you are cleaning your teeth or doing the washing up.

Jon Kabat-Zinn, the Godfather of Mindfulness summed it up pretty well in his first book ‘Full Catastrophe Living’ as; ‘The awareness that arises by paying attention on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgementally.’

Practicing mindfulness can give people permission to do something radical for themselves and experience with living intentionally from moment to moment.

Are you always in doing mode and are you wanting to find more presence in your everyday life? If this is you - then why not sign up to my free taster in the link below, which is taking place next Tuesday and will give you a taste of the easy practical tools that the Mindfulness NOW programme can offer you.

MINDFULNESS CLIENT TESTIMONIAL // I am very happy to share this lovely testimonial from a client who I have worked with recently - supporting her with being more present and sharing the impactful and real Mindfulness NOW programme.

“I went to Sarah because my mind just wouldn’t slow down. I constantly felt distracted, like I was always chasing time. I struggled with being present and really listening, even though I wanted to. I didn’t want complicated mindfulness theories. I wanted simple, real tools that I could actually use in my everyday life. That’s exactly what Sarah gave me. She has this honest, humble, direct way of guiding you. She challenges you, but in a good way, the kind that helps you grow without feeling pushed. The techniques she shared were practical and doable. Small shifts that made a big difference. I’m more present in conversations, less frustrated with myself and more aware of when my mind starts racing. I feel more grounded. Calmer. Not perfect,
but better, in a very real way. I’m so grateful for her help. Thank you.” Head of Marketing, aged 48, Kent.

Can you relate? If you would like to find some calm in the storm and gain some practical skills to cope with modern day living then why not attend my up and coming free 30 minute taster session on the 3rd March 7pm. Look out for a link to sign up soon.

CELEBRATIONS // I am very happy to share that I passed my Mindfulness NOW teacher training last week. After a pretty difficult year, it’s great to receive a lovely email from Maddie the great trainer I had at the school last year, saying I had passed my qualification with flying colours.

Practicing mindfulness has been such an important anchor in my life over the last years and I am excited to see how I can bring this effective and real life practice to more people in the future. My passion is to help young people, families and anyone feeling that they are looking to find a toolkit for coping with modern day living.

I know if I had found simple breathing and meditation techniques earlier in my life, it could have really helped me cope with many things that come to challenge us through our lives.

Do reach out if you are interesting in signing up for some on line or in person mindfulness classes or you work somewhere that may benefit for mindfulness workshops. Watch this space for updates. DM for more information.

ARTISTS DATE // Part of trying to live in flow and following the Artists Way principles, is having regular artist dates. Building in a weekly date to do something creative. I really don’t do much art or have much experience in this field but I feel it’s so important to be childlike and just have a go and let go of judgement and expectations.

With that in mind, I am proud to share my pastel work of art produced on Sunday afternoon at . What a great little spot discovered by . What fun we had and it was lovely to just have a go with different art materials and not worry about the outcomes.

ARE YOU HIBERNATING? // I don’t know about you but I feel like I have been in hibernation for most of January! I have just been working, trying to look after myself and exercising. I then reached out to a few friends and they were feeling the same. Going for walks in nature have been a non negotiable through the time though, as always good to be reminded about the lessons nature can teach us. Nothing happens above ground in winter and a lot of animals go into hibernation so let’s follow their lead.

Have you been following nature too and channeling your inner hedgehog? 🦔

LIFE COACHING // It has always been my dream that everyone gets the opportunity and access to work with a coach. I do believe if people got to work with a coach early in their life then they would have the support to start living a life they love rather than waiting for life to show them they are maybe on the wrong track.

I know I found coaching pretty late in life, after a serious life incident eleven years ago I started working with a coach to help me review my life and my patterns that I was playing out. It was hard but I look back now and I am very grateful to have found Michelle my lovely coach and then that lead me to training to be a coach myself so I can hold other people’s hand, supporting them on the path of life.

If you want to know more about coaching and how it could help you, why not book a free 30 minute discovery call with me. Either email me on sarah@arboricoaching.co.uk or message me on 0771 363 1565 and we can book a chat and it could be the exciting start of your next chapter.

THE GUEST HOUSE // Looking back on last year, one of the hardest years I have experienced, one phrase that I always came back to was about welcoming in whatever came to me whether it was good or bad as it is coming to teach me something. This comes from the beautiful and powerful poem The Guest House by Rumi. I am sure most people know this poem but I felt drawn to share it and hopefully it might resonate with you and might offer you some support and help like it has done for me over the years.

THE GUEST HOUSE

This being human is a guest house.

Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness, some

momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all! Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,

who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture.

Still treat each guest honourably.

He may be clearing you out for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice.

Meet them at the door laughing, and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,

because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.

Rumi

BEING PLAYFUL // Are you playful? I always have to remind myself about the importance of being playful as a grown up. Life can get so serious sometimes so I am consciously making sure I am embracing my own playfulness and I am also looking out for playfulness as an important character trait when I am dating and looking for my life partner.

There is plenty of research to back up that playfulness is important to our wellbeing. A study from the University of Illinois found that participants who rated themselves most highly on playful character traits - such as spontaneity and willing to ‘clown around’ - experiences lower levels of perceived stress.

How do you bring playfulness into your life? This is a photo of me being a gnome with my work colleague at the time in Regent Park!
