National Apprenticeship Week 2026

Risedale offers Functional Skills Maths and English at Level 1 and Level 2 to all those who are studying with us but may not have a relevant GCSE qualification.
We have supported hundreds of students to pass Functional Skills over the last ten or so years, in small classes of about 8 -12 people. Often those learners have had dyslexia or other learning difficulties.

Level 2 Functional Skills is equivalent to a GCSE grade 4. This means that if someone passes Functional Skills at Level 2, they can study other things at level 3 and then possibly do a degree or further training for a career. Many of the people Risedale has taught have gone on to be Nurses.

GCSE Maths requires approximately 120 hours in class, while Functional Skills Maths requires about 55 hours in class. This varies from person to person, but it generally takes less time to achieve Functional Skills.

We usually teach students for about 3 hours, in one day, per week. They can email us outside of that if they have a question. We provide our students with all the materials they need.

There is no limit to the number of times a student can sit a Functional Skills exam, but they should sit practice exams to prepare and to make sure that they are ready.
It is normal for students to feel anxious when beginning Functional Skills. They may not have studied for a long time, or they may have had difficulty studying at school. Remember, other students at Risedale have felt the same way and have gone on to pass Functional Skills and have a career in nursing.

We can break Maths and English into bite-size chunks and achieve it in our own time.

National Apprenticeship Week 2026.

Today we are hearing from Ebony, a first year student undertaking a Level 2 Adult Care Worker qualification.

"I wanted to undertake an apprenticeship with Risedale as it would allow me to gain practical, hands-on experience while developing the knowledge and skills needed for a career in health and social care

I was definitely worried weather the job would be for me, however through my time I have learnt to love my experience more and more each day

The best part about my apprenticeship, I have definitely learned more about myself witch has helped me grow as a person but also the new friends I have grown connections with by being welcomed so well. I am very interested in doing my Nursing.

It is 100% worth it, gaining a qualification while also working and that Risedale support you every step of the way."

National Apprenticeship week 2026

Today we are hearing from Caitlyn who works of us here at Risedale and had just commenced her top up degree to become a Registered Nurse - paid for by Risedale.

"Working with Risedale has had a truly transformative impact on my career. The support, guidance, and opportunities provided throughout my assistant practitioner degree apprenticeship have helped me grow both professionally and personally. Risedale has encouraged me to push my potential and given me the confidence to progress in my career within healthcare.

Thanks to the apprenticeship pathway, I have been able to achieve my assistant practitioner degree while gaining invaluable hands-on experience. I am incredibly grateful for the mentorship, encouragement, and belief shown in me by the Risedale team.

This January I began my top-up degree to become a Registered Nurse—an achievement I owe a large part to Risedale. I am proud of how far I have come, and even more thankful for the opportunities this organisation has given me to grow, learn, and thrive.

Thankyou to Barbara, Ashleigh, my manager Faye and all the others behind the scenes, for everything they have done and continue to do to support and guide me."
