Innovation that protects antibiotics 💊

Sometimes, innovation is the best defence in protecting antibiotics. Stuart Bond (Consultant Antimicrobial Pharmacist) and Sarah Odabashy (Innovation Manager) have been leading a project in our Emergency Departments at Pinderfields and Dewsbury Hospitals to change how we diagnose and treat urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Thanks to a new machine, clinicians can now identify which antibiotic is needed within just one hour, compared to the traditional two-day laboratory process.

Stuart said: “This means we can start the right treatment faster, avoid unnecessary antibiotics, and improve patient outcomes.”

Trust your clinician’s advice and never pressure your doctor for antibiotics “just in case."

🥰This , Jess said: "We’d like to say a massive thank you to all the incredible midwives at Pinderfields who safely delivered our beautiful baby boy, Louie, on Saturday 8th November.

"A very special thank you to Fazila, Chloe, and Chloe for the amazing care and support you gave us throughout the birth. Although my labour was quite complicated at times, your calm, reassuring presence and friendly nature made the whole experience so much more positive.

"From the moment we arrived in the morning right through to the end of your shift, you looked after us with such kindness and professionalism.

"We’re so grateful for everything you did — thank you from the bottom of our hearts. With love, Jess, Brad, and baby Louie "

🌡️❄️ Brrr... It's certainly chilly out there!

If you have an appointment at one of our hospitals, please allow extra time for your journey 🚗

Remember that cold weather can make existing health problems worse. Those most at risk are:
• People aged 65+
• Babies and children under 5
• Those with long-term health conditions or disabilities
• Pregnant women
• People on low incomes or with mental health conditions

If you're in an at-risk group or 65 and over, it’s important to seek medical advice as soon as you feel unwell. You can contact your GP for online, phone, or in-person consultations. Or use NHS 111 online (111.nhs.uk) or NHS 111 by phone for urgent medical issues when you're unsure what to do.

In an emergency, please go to A&E or call 999 immediately.

💙 Take care of yourself:
• If you don’t need to go out, please stay home.
• Keep your home warm—at least 18°C in rooms you use regularly.
• Check your heating and cooking appliances are safe by contacting a Gas Safe registered engineer.

🏠💙 As temperatures drop, think of others who may need a little extra help—older neighbours, friends, or family members. Check they have enough food and medication. Encourage safe footwear and scarves if they need to go out. And look out for signs of hypothermia and know when to seek help.

🌐 Need advice?
• For urgent medical advice: NHS 111 (111.nhs.uk or call 111)
• For financial help with energy costs: visit GOV.UK or call 0800 444 202.
• Worried about a neighbour? Call Age UK at 0800 678 1602 or contact your local council.

A year after welcoming their son Jude into the world, William and Tonie Hopkins from Barnsley have reached out to thank our maternity team for the care that helped save his life 💙

Tonie said: “I want to say a huge thank you to my midwife and coordinator, Charlotte. In the most frightening moments of my life, you were the one who noticed my baby was in trouble. Your quick thinking, calmness, and instinct quite literally saved us. You acted without hesitation and got me to theatre before it was too late. I will never forget the care, compassion, and strength you showed that day.”

She also shared her gratitude to the surgeon who delivered Jude safely: “We would like to thank my surgeon, Mr Mike Togobo, for delivering Jude to me safely during the emergency C-section. Your professionalism and steady care helped put me at ease during a difficult moment, and I’m very grateful for everything you did for us.”

It’s World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (18–24 November 2025)

This week we’re joining the global campaign to raise awareness of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) - one of the biggest threats to public health today.

Antibiotics are life-saving medicines that treat infections and keep routine healthcare safe. But over time, bacteria can become resistant when antibiotics are used incorrectly or too often. That means infections that were once easy to treat could become much harder - or even impossible - to cure. This week we will be sharing a number of interesting insights to our key staff members who work against Antimicrobial Resistance and look into what their role entails.

Nicola Walker: Protecting antibiotics for the future

Specialist Pharmacy Technician - Antimicrobials, OPAT and Integrated Care Team
When Nicola visits patients who are receiving intravenous antibiotics at home, she knows that every prescription matters - not just for that patient, but for all of us.
“Even though our patients are being treated at home, we closely monitor them for side effects or any sign that their condition is changing. As soon as it’s safe, we stop the intravenous antibiotics. Making sure each person receives the right antibiotic for the right amount of time helps protect their future use.”

Nicola’s team works hand in hand with microbiologists, antimicrobial pharmacists and community nurses to ensure every dose is necessary, safe and effective. This precision helps stop antibiotic resistance from developing - a growing global threat that affects everyone.
“Antibiotic resistance is everyone’s responsibility, and we can all play a part in protecting their use. Visit antibioticguardian.com to find out how.”

Our neonatal team is celebrating World Prematurity Day today with a bake sale aimed at raising awareness and raising funds for the babies and families we care for. 🍰

All money raised through MY Hospitals Charity will go towards Christmas presents for babies on the neonatal unit and transitional care, as well as our Neonatal Buddies Group, which supports families after discharge.

Every year, 1 in 10 babies is born prematurely. World Prematurity Day helps us honour their strength, recognise the challenges families face, and celebrate the incredible work of our neonatal staff. 💜

Thank you to everyone who has baked, donated, or stopped by to show support today.
