The HPV vaccine reduces your chances of getting human papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus that's spread through skin contact (usually when having s*x).

Most types of HPV are harmless. But some types are linked to an increased risk of certain types of cancer, including cervical cancer.

It's still important to attend cervical screening appointments if you've been vaccinated against HPV.

Cervical screening (smear test) isn't always easy. But it is one of the best ways to protect yourself from cervical cancer.

Cervical screening is not a test for cancer, it's a test to help prevent cancer. It checks a sample of cells from your cervix for high risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV).

High risk HPV can cause abnormal changes to the cells in your cervix.
