Ahead of Stroke Prevention Day tomorrow, we want to ask you, do you know what your blood pressure is and if so, how often do you get it checked?
You may not have thought about getting your blood pressure checked regularly but it’s crucial that we all do, because high blood pressure is the biggest cause of stroke and plays a part in about half of all strokes.
There’s a number of things that put you at greater risk of high blood pressure.
For example, eating too much salt, being inactive, drinking too much and smoking. Stress can also cause temporarily high blood pressure and whilst we’re stressed, we may adopt unhealthy habits like the ones mentioned above.
Health conditions like Diabetes and Kidney disease also cause high blood pressure and certain medications like the combined oral contraceptive pill (combi pill) and steroids.
If you find out you have high blood pressure (also known as hypertension) there’s lots of changes you can make to lower it, such as reducing your salt intake and eating a balanced diet.
You should also consider seeing your GP. In some cases, only medication can help reduce your blood pressure.
You can find more information about why we're encouraging everyone to get regular blood pressure checks this Stroke Prevention Day and how high blood pressure can lead to stroke on our website: https://bit.ly/4gldy3g
