Neural reprogramming can take a while to achieve, but did you know that it can also happen instantaneously?

That boom 💥 🤯 moment is what it feels like when this happens. When an existing neural pathway is suddenly broken and a new one instantly replaces it, the way you think about that particular thing/situation/issue changes instantaneously and it changes forever. That’s the power of 100% belief in the new realisation.

Following this logic, if you can cultivate an open, curious mindset that understands BELIEF is a MATTER OF CHOICE, not of fact, you can change whatever you want INSTANTLY.

Expectations are conditioned by our past experiences - past negative experiences create brain circuitry that limits our future experience, where positive past experiences open us up to new possibilities. Knowledge of this enables us to stay in the present and allow the possibility of change for the better. Alongside creating more positive experiences intentionally, this is a powerful force for overcoming pain and bringing joy to our lives.
Thank you for this reminder 💐

Fear (and anger) wear different and surprising disguises. It can easily fool you into believing it. When you catch your brain giving you fearful thoughts, thank it for trying to keep you safe and recognise it for what it is. Your brain is used to going to fear and discomfort thoughts, obsessing on current situations, serving up flashbacks of past painful situations - that’s what’s familiar and what it does to make sure you stay “safe”. but you don’t have to settle for fear. See it for what it is. It’s all the same thing at the end of the day. Your brain, serving up a horror movie, that isn’t TRUE.

Sometimes when our amygdala develops from early childhood to young adulthood it learns that the sensations in our own bodies are unsafe. This sets us up for a lifetime of chronic symptoms and pain. Somatic Tracking, or paying mindful attention to bodily sensations, is the way out of this fear-pain cycle.

It can be very scary at first, so start with just a second or two and build to longer periods as you get comfortable with it.

:relax your breathing and get centred
:with a light focus (as if you’re watching clouds pass overhead) and without trying to make it go away, bring your attention to an area of pain, or sensation in your body.
:just lightly observe the quality of the sensation. Does it prickle, throb, tingle? Whatever it does is ok, we just watching with curiosity.
:does it move, spread, shrink? It doesn’t matter, we’re just watching the show
:are you still breathing and relaxed?
:well done ✅

Now practice every day and you’ll teach your brain that sensations in the body are safe and it can turn off the alarm system (pain/symptoms).

YOU ARE SAFE.

After a Client call yesterday, it struck me that a decision-tree could be useful for people who get high anxiety. When we are whirling around in frightening thought cycles it can be difficult to see the way out.

The first and MOST IMPORTANT question is:
“Am I at immediate risk of physical or psychological harm?”

If the answer is, “Yes”, or even, “Possibly”, there are three choices:

1. Do whatever you can to end this situation
2. Do whatever you can to remove yourself from this situation
3. Accept the situation and the risk and keep going around in circles until you choose 1. Or 2. Instead (not recommended)

When you take active steps to protect yourself the anxiety goes away and is replaced with a sense of personal power and agency. Anxiety has a CRUCIAL BIOLOGICAL PURPOSE that helps you to recognise when you are at risk of harm. Do not wish it away entirely so that you can place yourself in harms way whilst feeling super-contented. Make friends with it and and appreciate what it is doing for you.

IT’S OK to make decisions about what activities are for you and which are not for you in any moment.

When we live with a lot of anxiety we usually feel anxious about situations that are not dangerous as well. This is because the brain has become sensitised and habituated to the state of fear. We tend to wish anxiety away constantly and it can get confusing. We don’t want it even when it’s serving a useful purpose.

In this case we don’t need to DO anything.

-Make friends with the anxiety
-Ask it what it wants
-Decide if it’s being reasonable
-Take conscious considered action, if needed
-Create a happy story to tell yourself instead of living a horror movie.
