Part of solution focused work involves helping our clients identify the signs that things are going better. Often these are tiny, imperceptible things. Yesterday something happened when I visited my dad that I wanted to share - because it really warmed my heart. This was a huge sign that things are going better.

After losing my mum, my dad said he’d never put the xmas tree up again. Now if you’d have seen how many xmas decs my mum would put up you’d understand how sad this was. Christmas, the memories, the nostalgia, only amplifies feelings of loss doesn’t it?

Then yesterday, my dad said he felt ready to put the Christmas tree up. So you can imagine my joy when he asked me to help him decorate it.

This is eight years on.

Navigating grief of that significant person in your life is the most painful thing we’ll encounter. But us humans are gifted with the resource of adaptability. It’s the biggest skill we have - without it we’d never survive.

Acceptance and that adaptability can take a long, long time but we all have it.

Never give up on hope. Hope is always present. We just need a bit of time for the eyes to adjust to see the light.

Today is World Menopause Day! And I was so happy to find that this years theme is Lifestyle Medicine. This theme highlights how lifestyle choices like diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management can significantly impact the experience of menopause and support long-term health.

The menopause space is heavily dominated by bio medical treatments. And that’s absolutely fine. But it’s also really important to think about your lifestyle choices at this point in our lives. There’s no need to fear menopause, it’s a natural transition that we all go through as part of ageing. And there’s so much we CAN do to support ourselves as we enter this gateway…. Whether you take HRT or not!

We tend to think of menopause as ovarian decline, down to our lowering oestrogen and progesterone. But what’s not widely understood is the effect that these changing hormones have on other hormones in the body. And these hormones that I’m talking about affect our sleep, the gut, thyroid and pancreas. Lowering oestrogen also affects our hearts, which is why the type of exercise we take part in matters.

I think there’s often a bit of sadness when we reach this stage. But when we make good decisions that support health longevity we feel good. And when we feel good we feel happier.

Some of these choices for me have made so much difference in the way I feel, here’s some examples:

1) I invest in a really good quality extra virgin olive oil. Yes it’s expensive. But I don’t spend money on expensive wine anymore! Wine made my acid reflux and my hot flushes tenfold. EVOO made a noticeable difference on my brain function as well as stiffness AND helped towards better sleep!

2) I get out in natural day light every morning to support my circadian rhythm. I walk steep hills to support my heart health. This not only clears my head and sets me up for the day, it supports my sleep as the day light shuts off my melatonin. (I used to suffer terribly with insomnia).

3) The timing of my meals and what I eat, especially in the evening massively helped towards get rid of hot flushes. I stick to low GI, Mediterranean when possible, intermittent fasting helped lower insulin sensitivity.

What if passivity isn’t keeping the peace, it’s COSTING you your peace?

“It’s just easier not to say anything.”
A phrase I hear all the time from clients.
And I get it, avoiding confrontation feels like the safer option. Until it isn’t.

Because when we suppress how we really feel, those emotions don’t disappear. They simmer and they build up and eventually, they spill.

You snap at your partner, or you lose your cool in a meeting, you overreact to something seemingly trivial… and then blame yourself for being “too sensitive.”

Suppressing might feel like self-control but often it’s just self-protection, a habit learned in childhood or past relationships.

But expressing emotion doesn’t have to mean conflict or aggression.

Expressing can be delivered calmly and confidently.
If it feels unnatural to speak up, it just because it’s new for you.

You can start by confiding in a friend or colleague about how you’re feeling. If that feels too much get your feelings down on paper.
