Spring Mini Retreat — What a Beautiful Beginning 🌿

Our Spring Mini Retreat concluded this week — and what a day it was.

Fully booked, and without even being formally marketed. The spaces filled quietly and quickly, which in itself felt aligned with the theme: Atha — now begins.

Mimicking the movement from winter to spring, we softened into yin, moved through a strong practice, wandered through the garden, rested deeply in Yoga Nidra, and shared cake, tea and conversation. The venue held us beautifully. The company was generous. The laughter… well, that couldn’t be resisted.

One piece of feedback that stayed with me:

“Beautiful afternoon and very well thought out. The yoga was brilliant, lovely cake at the end and great company. Very relaxed and friendly and a wonderful few hours to just be. Would very much recommend and will be back for future retreats.”

Moments like these are why seasonal retreats matter — not grand gestures, just intentional pauses.

Thank you to everyone who shared their time and energy. It’s an honour to hold space for such thoughtful, like-minded individuals.

Our next retreat will take place in the first half of June, embracing the energy of summer — including yoga practice and a wild river swim.

Details will be shared soon.

Until then, remember: you can begin again anytime. 🌸

I miss teaching.

I haven't taught for two weeks, and my body aches for a room of yogis moving in synchronization—that sacred, rhythmic pulse where we breathe as one and honor our edges with grace. I miss the shared silence of a room accepting its own humanity.

But I also recognize that I am where I am needed. Death has its own vinyasa, a season of letting go that requires my full, unhurried presence. So, while the classes are at a pause, I am sitting in the quiet space where grief meets gratitude, learning to breathe through the stillness just as we breathe through the pose. I am honoring a departure so that I may eventually return with a full heart.

I will be back soon, ready to flow with you again, on February 11th (sessions and classes resuming on the 12th)

✨ The Power of the Human Touch in Pilates ✨
Ever feel like your body isn't quite doing what your brain thinks it is? That’s where the magic of a tactile cue comes in! 🖐️

In today’s snippet, we’re looking at Single Leg Pulling on the Long Box. This move is a powerhouse for posterior chain strength, but it’s incredibly easy for the hips to hike or the lower back to take over.

Why Tactile Cues Matter 🧘
While verbal cues are great, sometimes the nervous system needs a physical "map" to find the right muscles. Here’s why we use them:

- Immediate Biofeedback: A gentle hand on the sacrum or hip helps the client feel if their pelvis is tilting.

- Precision Alignment: On the Long Box, it’s vital to keep the hips square. A physical touch helps the client "anchor" their stationary side.

- Safety First: We ensure the spine stays long and neutral, preventing unnecessary strain on the lumbar area during the pull.

- Mind-Body Connection: It bridges the gap between "I think I'm straight" and "I know I'm aligned."

- Instructor Tip: Always ask for consent before providing tactile feedback! A simple "Is it okay if I adjust your hip alignment?" goes a long way in building trust.

Precision is the path to results. Next time you're on the Reformer, notice how a small adjustment can turn a "good" move into a "transformative" one! 💪🔥

Grief is a gravity that breaks what will not bend.

Yoga invites us to un-clench. It whispers that to carry a heavy heart, one must become as soft. In the quiet curve of a pose, we learn that yielding is our greatest protection. We soften not to let the pain go, but to let it in—giving it room to move so it doesn’t settle and turn to stone.

This practice doesn't ask us to walk away from our loss. It simply gives us the strength to breathe while we hold it. It is a slow, sacred leaning forward—a reminder that we can be broken open and still be whole

Due to a family bereavement, I will be going home to the Philippines tomorrow until the 10th of February. There will be a class later this evening, however.

I will be cancelling all classes and Reformer sessions within the dates. If you have already booked a session, please text or WhatsApp me a preferred reschedule date for when I am back and will rebook you then. If you need me to extend your subscription, please let me know and I will do so.

Apologies all for the inconvenience and thank you so much for understanding.

A reminder: using props is not failure.

Blocks, belts, cushions and bricks aren’t shortcuts — they’re support.
And support is what makes a yoga practice sustainable.

Your body is not the same every day.
It changes with energy, stress, sleep, hormones, recovery, strength, and seasons of life.

So your practice should be allowed to change too.

Props help you meet the pose with respect, not force.
They bring the floor closer.
They create space where you need it.
They help you stay steady, safe, and connected to your breath.

There is no shame in needing support.
There is only wisdom in listening.

Single Leg Push — Essential 1 (Reformer Pilates)
One leg presses… the other stays steady in tabletop without drifting, wobbling, or dropping.

This student is a stay-at-home mum of 4, and for years she’s been focusing on everyone else and everything.
Exercise was minimal — the occasional Zumba class here and there.

When she first started Reformer, she couldn’t hold the tabletop knee still for long. She’d have to stop every 2–3 reps because the leg would shake or drop.

Now she can stabilise it for 8–10 reps with control.

So what does this indicate?
It shows improved core endurance, hip stability, and pelvic control — the strength that helps your body stay aligned while one side moves.
Less compensation. More confidence. More control.

And the best part?
She told me she knows Reformer has helped her because she can now do most of her yoga poses — with more steadiness, balance, and strength.

How has this been achieved? 👇
What do you think made the biggest difference: consistency, technique, progressive loading… or something else?

If you think Reformer footwork is “easy”… this one is the foundation for everything that comes next. 😄

This is Second Position Footwork (turned out/lateral) and it’s a “basic” that builds advanced skills—because it teaches the control you need for intermediate and advanced Reformer work.

🫶 Press out: don’t just push—hug the inner thighs towards each other (like you’re zipping up the legs).
🌀 Return: the real work? Resist the springs all the way in—slow, controlled, no snapping back.

🏗️ Why it’s the foundation for intermediate + advanced Reformer
✅ Trains pelvic stability while the legs move (key for long stretch, teaser work, kneeling series)
✅ Builds hip + inner thigh connection for cleaner lines and stronger transitions
✅ Improves knee tracking + alignment so you load safely when exercises get bigger
✅ Teaches eccentric control (the “return”)—the skill that makes advanced work feel smooth instead of shaky

✨ Why we love it at Yoga Riva, Dartford
🍑 Stronger glutes + inner thighs
🦵 Better hip stability + knee alignment
🧠 More control and connection (not just reps)
🫧 Low-impact strength that carries into everyday movement
