👩‍🦽 Staff who transport children to and from schools with special educational needs play an important role in the overall care and wellbeing during transport and have huge responsibilities to ensure their safety.

😊 We at Solutions have had the privilege of working with these dedicated people for over thirty years training them in a range of skills including, disability awareness, moving and handling, emergency first aid, managing challenging behaviour and in recent years training them in the use of “Rescue medication” for children suffering tonic clonic epileptic seizures.

📌 After their initial training staff working for Achieving for Children in South London attend an annual skills MOT for just one hr when they demonstrate on manikins the protocol for the safe administration of the medication on pre filled syringes called “Buccal Midazolam” and complete a short answer paper to evidence their theoretical skills are maintained.

📆 The month of April is stress awareness driven by the H.S.E. Evidence shows that the causes of stress are due to demands, control, support, relationships, role, and change.

🔊 It is estimated that about 61% of adults with a mental health issue do not seek assistance.

📢 📢 Our Online Conflict Resolution For The Ambulance Community course was originally developed in partnership with Southwestern Ambulance foundation trust and has been updated for 2025 to reflect the “work without fear” campaign being launched by the Association of Ambulance Chief Executives.

🚑 This programme has been completed by A&E, PTS and Community First Responders and includes a range of filmed scenarios for staff to test their risk assessment skills for a pub fight, a family dispute, a patient who has self-harmed and kicks off and a PTS crew being threatened to be forcibly detained in a house for being late.

📌Last week we ran a four day moving and handling and risk assessor training course at the huge ambulance hub and HQ for West Midlands Ambulance Trust. In addition to members of the trusts education team were two paramedic lecturers from the University of West Scotland and a Training Officer from DHL ambulance services in London.

This mix lead to an opportunity to share ideas and practice between the public, independent and academic sectors. All three organisations have been customers for many years.

Feedback was first class and along with learning best practice and conducting risk assessments they found the unique method of instruction they were taught to use very valuable particularly as one person had no prior training skills and was able to deliver a faultless micro teach. Success results in the awarding of the QNUK Level 3 award Moving and Handling for Trainers ( Emergency Services) which is on the regulated qualifications framework. Well done to all involved.

De Montford University have booked Solutions to deliver both Conflict Resolution and Moving and Handling for their student paramedics to ensure they are kept safe when out on their first placements in 2027. We have been working with the London Borough of Harrow social care teams for twenty two years delivering bespoke moving and handling training for their teams who are supporting increasingly complex people.
Updated every year with a half day workshop we not only update them as needed but help them develop handling plans and verify their risk assessments. In the past month we’ve done that for over 50 staff.
Particular themes this year have included how to avoid nocebic language and what to use instead plus how to embed muscle memory to avoid poor postures. Prior to attending they complete our online knowledge assessment so the workshop can focus on practical solutions. All feedback said extremely valuable and fun.

🧠 Mental Health - The cost for UK employers alone is £56 billion (source Office for national statistics) this is a very worrying the trend is on the increase.

The updated First Aid at work regulations in 2024 now requires employers to consider Mental Health First Aid provision, so it’s now a legal requirement.

Having trained Mental Health First aider(s) / Champions in the workplace we can evidence that staff who are unwell are being spotted, and workers are more willing to approach a colleague rather than a faceless employee assistance programme.
