Grounded & settled kids = happier parents & carers!!! Kids have LOTS of pressures- school, growing up, friendship groups, family life, mental & physical health challenges…among many more. It’s more & more prevalent for children to struggle with anxiety, low mood & self-esteem issues.

Kid sessions in Soul Space use movement, breath, mindfulness & creativity in a fun and accessible way to help kids feel empowered and build their tool kits for self-regulation. Being a single mom of 3 girls under 11 (bracing myself for teen years 😬) has taught me the importance of giving children the knowledge, language and skills to understand what’s going on in their bodies & minds and express it in a healthy & effective way. This builds self’s-awareness, confidence and most of all, self- love & acceptance.

There will be music, there will be movement, there will be creativity & most of all there will be non-judgemental acceptance & building each other up as unique individuals. Bullies. Power & control. They come in all shapes, sizes & ages. Sometimes they are outwardly mean & unkind. But the even more damaging ones, are the ones who make you feel bad about yourself but you can’t really put your finger on why. If you explain it to a teacher or a parent, they may say things like “that doesn’t sound so bad” or “maybe they were just kidding”. But you know, by what your body says, that’s not the case.

Our bodies constantly give us information about what’s going on in our outside and inside environment to try to keep us safe. If kids learn to ignore these cues from the body, instead of listening to them, it can be problematic as they get older because it means they may stop listening to their intuition and trusting their gut (which is actually in direct communication with the brain).

So what can you do? Helping children to understand that although they can’t control what other people say & do, but that they do have the power to practice how to control how they respond can be really empowering. This can be done by learning to understand what the inside of their body is telling them, and then choosing a tool that works for them to soften the way they respond to the situation, but most importantly, soften the way they are towards themselves. The breath & repetition of phrases they connect with (or mantra) are super effective for this. It calms the nervous system, builds a mindfulness practice, and also strengthens new pathways in the brain for positive thought processes.
