👂❗ MYTH BUSTER: Do you *always* need wax softener before ear wax removal?

Not necessarily!

Many people are told to use drops for days before their appointment—but the truth is, this isn’t always needed. In some cases, overusing wax softeners can:
⚠️ Irritate the ear canal
⚠️ Make wax swell and feel more blocked
⚠️ Delay getting proper treatment

Every ear is different. A trained professional can assess your ears and decide the safest, most effective way to remove wax—whether that involves softening or not.

💡 The takeaway? Don’t self-treat blindly—get expert advice first.

The science behind how ear wax causes hearing loss!

22/03/2026

👂 **How Impacted Ear Wax Can Cause Hearing Loss — The Science Explained

Did you know that ear wax (cerumen) can physically reduce your hearing when it becomes impacted? Here’s what actually happens inside the ear:

🔎 **Normal Hearing**
Sound travels through the ear canal as sound waves until it reaches the **ear drum (tympanic membrane)**.
The ear drum vibrates in response to these sound waves, and those vibrations are passed through tiny bones in the middle ear to the inner ear — where sound is converted into signals your brain understands.

🚫 **What Happens With Impacted Wax**
When wax builds up and becomes tightly packed, it creates a **physical barrier** in the ear canal.

This causes hearing loss in two main ways:

1️⃣ **Sound waves are blocked**
Less sound energy reaches the ear drum because the wax absorbs and reflects sound before it gets there.

2️⃣ **Reduced ear drum vibration**
The trapped wax changes how air moves in the ear canal. Without enough sound pressure reaching the ear drum, it cannot vibrate effectively — and weaker vibrations mean quieter signals sent to the brain.

🎧 **The Result**
This leads to what we call **conductive hearing loss** — hearing sounds as muffled, dull, or reduced in volume.

⚠️ **Common signs of impacted wax:**
• Muffled hearing
• Feeling of fullness in the ear
• Tinnitus (ringing)
• Mild dizziness
• Hearing improves temporarily after water exposure or movement

✅ **Good news:**
Hearing usually returns to normal once the blockage is safely removed by a trained professional.

💡 Avoid cotton buds — they often push wax deeper and worsen impaction.

Your ears are self-cleaning organs — sometimes they just need a little professional help!

One of the most satisfying parts of what I do is helping people hear properly again.

So many people put up with blocked ears, discomfort, or reduced hearing for weeks (sometimes months!) because they’re unsure what to do and where to turn.

Recently I helped someone who hadn’t realised how much their hearing had been affected—by the end of the appointment, the difference was immediate.

That moment when someone says “wow, I can hear properly again” will never get old.

If you’ve been dealing with ear discomfort or think you might have a wax build-up, feel free to message me. Happy to answer any questions—no pressure at all.

👂 **Ear Wax Removal: What You Should Know**

Ear wax (cerumen) is natural and actually helps protect your ears by trapping dust and bacteria. Most of the time, your ears clean themselves naturally.

⚠️ **Signs of buildup may include:**
• Muffled hearing
• Earache or pressure
• Itching in the ear
• Ringing in the ears

✅ **Safe options:**
• Ear-softening drops
• Warm water irrigation or microsuction by a professional

❌ **Avoid:**
• Cotton buds inside the ear
• Sharp objects
• Ear candling

If symptoms continue or affect your hearing, it’s best to see a healthcare professional.

Healthy ears = better hearing! 👂✨

Did you know that ears are self-cleaning? That’s right! Ear wax plays an important role in protecting your ears by trapping dust and bacteria.
A surprising thing to hear from an ear wax removal business, I know…
For most people, wax slowly moves out of the ear naturally. But sometimes it can build up and become impacted, especially if you:

• Wear hearing aids
• Use earphones frequently
• Have naturally narrow ear canals
• Have previously pushed wax deeper with cotton buds

When ear wax is impacted it can cause:

• Blocked hearing
• Ear discomfort
• Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
• Dizziness
• A feeling of pressure in the ear

👂 **What is ear wax — and why do we have it?**

Ear wax (cerumen) is completely natural and protects your ears by:

✅ Trapping dust and bacteria
✅ Preventing infections
✅ Keeping ears lubricated
✅ Cleaning the ear canal naturally

However, too much wax can build up and cause discomfort or hearing problems.

If you’re experiencing blocked ears, professional removal is the safest solution.
