Yoga has come to my rescue more times than I can mention.
It is so restoring, and no matter how subtle the movements, the wellbeing and peace that follows is immeasurable.
For me, understanding its impact came after my little girl was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition which meant she would need 24 hour care for the rest of her life.
I would say the only thing that sustained me was the yoga, consistency, when any other exercise just wired my nervous system too much. I was already wired with cortisol from all the stress, I needed something for my mental health, rather than purely physical.
A GP told me exercise for your mental health, not your physical. That fact remains as true to me today as it did then when Tilly was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome in 2018 aged 18 months old.
I say this because if you are struggling mentally, or feeling stagnant and fed up, or just generally deflated, yoga might be just what you need. Not because it is a cure all, but because by focusing on your breath and your gentle movements, you cant stay stuck in your mind.
It is impossible to focus on breath movement and the mind, so we come back into our bodies and regulate our nervous system at the same time.
A group of incredible ladies come to my Monday class and I am filled with gratitude for sharing space with them every week. They bring gorgeous gentle energy with them every week.
Showing up for yourself consistently each week takes effort, but you reap dividends in improved flexibility, wellbeing and mental health.
As Summer is here, I am running the next block starting Monday 27 June, with a couple of yet to be confirmed breaks in between, definitely 5 August I won’t be doing a class.
Because of many people only being able to make a few weeks, I am going to offer the classes for £9.50 a week, with a minimum of 3 weeks booked. It is usually a 6 week block, but I am adapting that for summer, so use this as a chance to come along and see what you think.
So if you know you can make 3 Mondays over the summer, from 6.40pm-7.40pm, at Nunroyd Cricket Club, on New Road, then DM me or email me at dolorescowburn10@gmail.com.
If anything has ever held you back before, then ask yourself: “If I wasn’t afraid what would I do?” and then do it.
Hope to see you on the mat.
