What does it really mean to train as a Plastic Surgeon in the UK? 🇬🇧✂️
Becoming a consultant plastic surgeon is not a short journey — it’s a marathon of dedication, resilience, and commitment. What many people don’t realise is just how rigorous the training pathway is and how much personal sacrifice it takes along the way.
Here are a few things you might not know 👇
🔹 Training takes over a decade — including medical school, foundation years, core surgical training, and specialist plastic surgery training.
🔹 You’ll often have to move around the country multiple times for different training posts — sometimes every 6 to 12 months — which means uprooting your life repeatedly.
🔹 When I applied for consultant jobs, there were just 18 positions available across the entire UK. Competition is intense, and you have to be ready to commit fully.
🔹 The experience is incredibly diverse — you work in trauma, burns, reconstruction, skin cancer, hand surgery, aesthetics and more.
🔹 Each step builds your knowledge, refines your technique and shapes the surgeon you become.
For me, this journey has been transformative. I’ve had the privilege of working alongside many exceptional consultants in different parts of the country — each teaching me unique approaches and techniques. Those experiences have shaped the surgeon I am today and allow me to offer my patients safe, high-quality, and personalised care.
