My name is Mr James Smith, and I am a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon based in Yorkshire. I am on the General Medical Council Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery, which means I have completed extensive specialist training and am fully accredited to practise as a consultant plastic surgeon in the UK.

Alongside my private practice at Coppergate Clinic, I also work within the NHS at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust where I practise as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon. Within the NHS, I am the clinical lead for melanoma, specialising in the diagnosis, surgical treatment, and reconstruction associated with skin cancer.

My work covers a wide range of procedures including skin cancer surgery, reconstructive surgery, and cosmetic procedures such as eyelid surgery, breast surgery, and body contouring. My approach is always centred around careful consultation, honest advice, and ensuring patients feel informed and comfortable throughout their journey.

Thank you so much for all the recent follows — it’s great to see so many new faces here, so I thought I’d do a quick introduction.

My name is Mr James Smith, and I’m a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon based in York. I practise privately at Coppergate Clinic and also work within the NHS at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. I completed extensive specialist training in plastic surgery and I’m on the GMC Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery. My qualifications include MBChB (Hons), PGCME, MFSTEd and FRCS (Plast).

Another busy and rewarding day here at Coppergate Clinic.

One of the things I value most about my work is the variety of patients I see each day. From consultations for tummy tucks and breast reductions to eyelid surgery and other aesthetic procedures, every patient brings a different story, different goals, and different reasons for considering surgery.

One of my most popular procedures here at Coppergate Clinic is an upper blepharoplasty.

As we age, the delicate skin of the upper eyelids can become loose and heavy. This can create a tired appearance, reduce the visible lid space, and in some cases even interfere with vision. An upper blepharoplasty is a precise surgical procedure that removes excess skin (and occasionally small amounts of fat) from the upper eyelids to restore a fresher, more open eye appearance.

The goal is not to change how you look — but to help you look like a more refreshed version of yourself.

This procedure is typically performed as a day case, often under local anaesthetic, with a relatively straightforward recovery. Scars are carefully placed within the natural crease of the eyelid so they are discreet once healed.

Patients often tell me they feel brighter, less tired, and more confident after surgery — particularly in photographs or without makeup.

What is a Fleur-de-Lis (FDL) tummy tuck?

A Fleur-de-Lis abdominoplasty is an advanced tummy tuck technique designed to remove excessive, apron-like skin both horizontally and vertically. This approach allows for significantly greater skin tightening — particularly in patients who have experienced major weight loss — and often results in a much more defined, contoured waistline compared to a standard tummy tuck.

By addressing laxity in two directions, the FDL technique can improve excess skin through the central abdomen as well as the lower abdomen, where a traditional approach alone may not achieve optimal tightening.

I perform a large number of Fleur-de-Lis tummy tucks here at Coppergate Clinic in our fully equipped theatres. Every patient is assessed individually, and during your consultation we will discuss which type of tummy tuck — standard, extended, mini, or FDL — is most appropriate for your anatomy, goals, and lifestyle.

As with all surgery, careful planning, scar discussion, recovery expectations and long-term outcomes are key parts of the consultation process.
