🛑TOPIC : VA**NA: WHAT'S NORMAL, WHAT'S NOT
Vaginal health affects more than just your s*x life. Find out about common va**nal problems and ways to promote a healthy va**na.
Vaginal health is an important part of a woman's overall health. Vaginal problems can affect your fertility, desire for s*x and ability to reach or**sm. Ongoing va**nal health issues can also cause stress or relationship problems and impact your self-confidence. Know the signs and symptoms of va**nal problems and what you can do to protect your va**nal health.
🛑 WHAT AFFECTS VA**NAL HEALTH❓
▫️The va**na is a closed muscular canal that extends from the v***a — the outside of the female ge***al area — to the neck of the uterus (cervix). Various factors can affect the health of your va**na, including:
▫️1️⃣SEX: Unprotected s*x can result in a s*xually transmitted infection. Forceful s*x or an injury to the pelvic area can result in va**nal trauma.
▫️2️⃣CERTAIN HEALTH CONDITIONS OR TREATMENTS: Conditions, such as endometriosis and pelvic inflammatory disease, might cause painful s*x. Scarring from pelvic surgery and certain cancer treatments also can cause painful s*x. Use of some antibiotics increases the risk of a va**nal yeast infection.
▫️3️⃣BIRTH CONTROL AND FEMININE-HYGIENE PRODUCTS: Barrier contraceptives, such as condoms, diaphragms and associated spermicide, can cause va**nal irritation. The use of sprays, deodorants or douches may cause irritation or make existing irritation worse.
▫️4️⃣PREGNANCY AND CHILDBIRTH: If you become pregnant, you'll stop menstruating until after your baby is born. During pregnancy, va**nal discharge often increases. Vaginal tears are relatively common during childbirth. In some cases, an episiotomy — an incision made in the tissue of the va**nal opening during childbirth — is needed. A va**nal delivery can also decrease muscle tone in the va**na.
▫️5️⃣PSYCHOLOGICAL ISSUES: Anxiety and depression can contribute to a low level of arousal and resulting discomfort or pain during s*x. Trauma — such as s*xual abuse or an initial painful s*xual experience — also can lead to pain associated with s*x.
▫️6️⃣HORMONE LEVELS: Changes in your hormone levels can affect your va**na. For example, estrogen production declines after menopause and during breast-feeding. Loss of estrogen can cause the va**nal lining to thin (va**nal atrophy) — making s*x painful.
🛑WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON VA**NAL PROBLEMS❓
▫️Conditions that might affect your va**na include:
▫️1️⃣SEXUAL PROBLEMS: These might include persistent or recurrent pain just before, during or after s*x (dyspareunia). Pain during pe*******on might be caused by involuntary spasms of the muscles of the va**nal wall (vaginismus). The muscles in the pelvic floor can become tense, causing chronic pain and pain during in*******se. Vaginal dryness, often occurring after menopause, can also cause pain during in*******se.
▫️2️⃣SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS: Various s*xually transmitted infections can affect the va**na, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, ge***al warts, syphilis and ge***al herpes. Signs might include abnormal va**nal discharge or ge***al sores.
▫️3️⃣VAGINITIS: An infection or change in the normal balance of va**nal yeast and bacteria can cause inflammation of the va**na (vaginitis). Symptoms include va**nal discharge, odor, itching and pain. Common types of vaginitis include bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections and trichomoniasis.
▫️4️⃣PELVIC FLOOR RELAXATION: If the supporting ligaments and connective tissues that hold the uterus and the va**nal walls in place become weak, the uterus, bladder, re**um or the va**nal walls might slip down (prolapse). This might cause urine leakage during coughing and sneezing or a bulge in the va**na.
▫️5️⃣OTHER RARE CONDITIONS: Vaginal cysts can cause pain during s*x or make it difficult to insert a tampon. Vaginal cancer — which might first appear as va**nal bleeding after menopause or s*x — also is a rare possibility.
🛑WHAT ARE SIGNS OR SYMPTOMS OF VA**NAL PROBLEMS❓
▫️Consult your doctor if you notice any of the following :
▫️1️⃣A change in the color, odor or amount of va**nal discharge
▫️2️⃣Vaginal redness or itching
▫️3️⃣Vaginal bleeding between periods, after s*x or after menopause
▫️4️⃣A mass or bulge in your va**na
▫️5️⃣Pain during in*******se
You might not need to see your doctor every time you have va**nal irritation and discharge, particularly if you've been diagnosed with a va**nal yeast infection in the past and you're experiencing similar signs and symptoms. However, if you choose to use an over-the-counter medication and your symptoms don't go away, consult your doctor.
🛑WHAT CAN I DO TO KEEP MY VA**NAL HEALTHY❓
▫️You can take steps to protect your va**nal health and overall health. For example:
▫️1️⃣BE SEXUALLY RESPONSIBLE: Use condoms or maintain a mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who's free of s*xually transmitted infections. If you use s*x toys, clean them after every use.
▫️2️⃣GET VACCINATED: Vaccinations can protect you from HPV, the virus associated with cervical cancer, as well as hepatitis B — a serious liver infection that can spread through s*xual contact.
▫️3️⃣DO KEGEL EXERCISES: Kegel exercises can help tone your pelvic floor muscles if you have prolapse, leaking of urine or weakness of the pelvic floor.
Know your medications. Discuss medication use and possible va**nal side effects with your doctor.
▫️4️⃣LIMIT THE AMOUNT OF ALCOHOL YOU DRINK AND DON'T SMOKE: Chronic alcohol abuse can impair s*xual function. Ni****ne might inhibit s*xual arousal. Substance abuse might also cause poor physical and mental health, which can affect s*xual function.
▫️📝While not all va**nal problems can be prevented, regular checkups can help ensure that problems affecting your va**na are diagnosed as soon as possible. Don't let embarrassment prevent you from talking to your doctor about any concerns you might have about your va**nal health.
