MMI 101 : Myths and Misconceptions about mental Health

People with Mental Health Challenges can live a very normal and productive life. There is very little evidence and statistics to generalize that persons with mental illnesses are violent. It is important that facts are separated from misconceptions/myths with regards to mental health so as to help tackle the stigma attached to it. Persons with mental health challenges can be active, helpful, kind, and productive members in our community.

MMI101- The trilogic approach to mental health Disorders.

Today we look at the host and environmental factors.

The agent factors are aspects within our surroundings which we may encounter that increases one’s susceptibility to mental illnesses. They may include (head injury, birth injury, ma*****na, alcohol, co***ne). These act on the hosts (individual) triggering MH conditions. The agent factors are also known as triggering/precipitating factors.

Environmental factors include stresses we encounter through our interpersonal relationships with the environment. Examples are workload, losses, unemployment etc.

An interaction of these three (host, agent & environmental) factors in a complex way leads to mental disorders.

It’s is important to mention that the severity of the predisposing factors (host factors) determines a person’s vulnerability for for Mental health conditions

MMI101: The trilogic approach to Mental Illness.

The aetiology/causative factors of mental disorders are multifaceted, involving complex interactions between a number of factors. The composite interactivity between the host (genetics), agent (drugs) and environmental factors (stress) largely leads to mental health disorders.

Let’s talk about the host factors today.

Hosts are persons with mental health disorders. The host factors are characteristics of a person that makes him or her susceptible to or resistant to a mental health condition. They comprise of all features of an individual making them liable to move to the severe symptoms of mental illness of the mental health spectrum. The characteristics may include genetic makeup of the person, age, s*x, constitution-physique (pyknic, asthenic, athletic), premorbid personality (schizoid, paranoid). Host factors are also known as The predisposing factors.
