EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIANS ASSOCIATION OF GHANA E M T A G has been formed under the Companies Code 1963 (Act 179) of the Republic of Ghana.

EMTAG is the national association for Emergency Medical Technicians and associated practitioners – Emergency Medical Technicians Association of Ghana (E.M.T.A.G.) It is aiming at becoming a high performing medical association due to the rich experience of its members in Ghana and Abroad as emergency medicine practitioners (EMTs and other associate practitioners). We are working hard to compliment the efforts of the National Ambulance Service (Ministry of Health) and other employers of Emergency Medical Technicians in Ghana in the following areas:
• Education
• Research
• Advocacy
• Development of First Responders Units in companies and communities
• Training in Emergency Response for companies
• Promotion of preventive health (Safety)

*Pathophysiology*

Myocardial infarction (MI) occurs when the heart muscle does not get adequate oxygen because of decreased blood supply, has an increased need for oxygen, or both.

*Myocardial infarctions occur in three stages:*

1. Ischemia due to lack of blood supply

2. Injury due to continued lack of blood supply

3. Infarction due to death of the myocardial cells

*Signs and Symptoms*

• Severe chest pain with or without diaphoresis

Nausea •

• Pain radiating to left arm, neck, and jaw

• Severe indigestion

• Epigastric pain

Facilitators and lectures of National Ambulance Service training school ( Paramedics and Emergency Care Training School -PECTS ) took part in a five-5 day capacity building , skill empowerment and teaching techniques workshop using technology (second phase). This program was organized by the management of National Ambulance Service under the leadership of Professor Ahmed Nuhu Zachariah ( C E O ) and his deputy, Dr Andah Nacurley in collaboration with the center for teaching support , university of cape coast lead by Professor D. D. Agyei .
The CEO seeks to make PECTS a leading force in emergency medicine and paramedics training in Africa. Participants included Advance and Senior Advance EMTs ( from NAS) , Doctors from KATH and staff from NAS-HQ.

Position: PARAMEDIC – ADVANCED EMT
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide emergency First Aid and advanced trauma life support to persons working on site;
• Provide medical aid such as AED, CPR, prevent spinal damage, ventilation, control severe bleeding, prevent shock, bandaging wounds, etc., to stabilize patient condition;
• Provide direct and indirect patient care;
• Transfer patients to the emergency units of the mine clinic or any location as may be directed by the medical doctor;
• Communicate effectively with operations management and support health workers in discharging their duties;
• Sterilize the ambulance’s interior if it is used to carry a patient suffering from infectious disease;
• Assist in developing and implementing health education and wellness programs across the mine;
• Restock all supplies in the ambulance and replace used blankets, linens and other supplies;
• Maintain an atmosphere of mutual trust, recognition and respect for patient;
• Perform clerical duties including documenting platform activities, typing reports, managing files and records;
• Drive to the scene and provide basic life support to the victims before they are transported to the hospital;
• Maintain a functional, clean clinic;
• Maintain employee medical records, in a confidential manner;
• Provide weekly activity reports to the supervisor Manager as required.
Desired Skills & Experience
Certified Paramedic + BLS + ACLS;
Have the ability to work in construction/ mining areas, where climbing will be required;
Successful completion of a Paramedic Training Program of the required number of hours and pass the certification examination;
Minimum of three (3) years of Emergency Response experience at the Advanced Paramedic level.
Certified by the National Ambulance Service of Ghana as a Paramedic – Advanced EMT;
ACLS and BCLS certifications are required and must be maintained;
Must have CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) certification;
Rescue qualifications and experience would be added value;
Must have a clean criminal background;
Must possess good communication and computer skills;
Must possess safety inspection and related skills;
Proficiency in Microsoft office and other related computer applications;
Well developed oral and written communication skills;
Good interpersonal skills and ability to interact with people of diverse cultures;
Must possess a valid Ghanaian driving license and have the ability to drive in rough terrain.
