A visual guide to how the body handles sugar when there is no diabetes, and in the most common types of diabetes: Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational Diabetes. Swipe through to learn more ➡️

What is diabetes?
Diabetes happens when the body can not use sugar (glucose) properly either because it doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use it well. This causes sugar to stay in the blood instead of being used for energy. Over time, high blood sugar can damage the heart, eyes, kidneys, nerves, and blood vessels. But, with the right care, support, and lifestyle habits, people living with diabetes can live long, healthy, and active lives.

14th November 💙 is World Diabetes Day.
Diabetes affects people of all ages and at all stages of life.

Today, we highlight the need for early detection and care, proper education on diabetes and its management, access to effective treatments and essential supplies, and supportive homes, communities, schools, workplaces, and healthcare facilities for everyone living with the condition.

Everyone living with diabetes deserves environments that enable safe, confident self-care for better health and quality of life.

🌍🥘🥭 It’s World Food Day!
This year also marks the 80th anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)🎊 ; a great time to remind ourselves that food is not a privilege but a human right. To ensure everyone has enough to eat and our planet stays healthy, we must grow and consume food sustainably.

🚜👨‍🌾 Growing food sustainably (sustainable farming) means producing food that meets today’s needs without making it harder for future generations to meet theirs. It conserves natural resources such as land and water, promotes biodiversity (the variety of life on Earth), and reduces pollution.

🍲🍉 Sustainable eating means choosing foods that are good for people and the planet; ensuring food security now and in the future. It involves eating more plant-based meals (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, pulses, and nuts), buying local and seasonal produce, reducing meat intake, choosing sustainably sourced fish, reducing food waste, and selecting food products with eco-friendly packaging.

🤝 This year’s theme, “Hand in hand for better food, a better future,” calls on everyone; governments, organizations, and individuals, to take action and work together for a food-secure, sustainable, and healthier future for all. 🌾🌎
