LET US TALK ABOUT MALE INTERLITY

Male infertility can be loosely defined as the inability of a man to impregnate a fertile woman after at least 12 months of regular, unprotected sexual in*******se. According to WHO projections, male factors are as much of a contributor to couple infertility worldwide as female factors, with each estimated at 50%.

In Ghana and most of Sub-Saharan Africa, the woman is the first to be pointed at when conception is not possible, and societal pressure is mounted. In our Zongos, men are even encouraged to add wives after a few years of marriage without a child; society automatically assumes that the man is fertile.

Women readily visit the hospital to seek solutions when a pregnancy is not forthcoming after a few years of marriage, so with this write-up, I will be using this space to address my brothers. Yes, you🫵🏾, all the back benchers move forward and listen🧏🏾‍♂️.

Male infertility is as common, if not more common than female intertility. Statistics show that it is higher in Ghanaian men than in women, with projections at about 60 to 70% of all cases. It is much easier to predict male’s infertility through medical tests than female’s. Some of the tests include;
Semen Analysis: This is the primary diagnostic tool used to assess s***m count (quantity), motility (movement), and morphology (shape). These three factors are essential for successful fertilization.
Infection Screening: Untreated or poorly managed infections such as STIs like gonorrhea and chlamydia or mumps related orchitis can damage s***m producing cells. This often leads to a reduction in s***m count and the formation of abnormally shaped s***m.
Scrotal Ultrasound: A significant percentage of infertile men are found to have varicoceles (enlarged veins within the sc***um). These veins increase the temperature around the testicles, which negatively impacts s***m production. This condition is typically diagnosed via a scrotal ultrasound.
Lifestyle Factors: Poor lifestyle choices, including excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, and a sedentary lifestyle, are significant contributors to reduced s***m quality and overall infertility.
Most fertility challenges are treatable. By consulting a trusted healthcare provider, you can undergo a comprehensive evaluation—including physical exams, lab tests, and imaging—to receive a treatment plan tailored to you.
