Ghana Health Service Marks International Day for Persons with Disabilities with Renewed Commitment to Inclusive Health Care
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) Headquarters was filled with energy and purpose on Wednesday, 3rd December 2025, as staff, partners, and advocates gathered to commemorate the International Day for Persons with Disabilities. Held under the theme “Building inclusive health service delivery for social progress,” the event reaffirmed GHS’s commitment to advancing disability inclusion across the health sector.
Participants were welcomed by the Disability Inclusion Team, with persons with disabilities taking active roles throughout the program, highlighting inclusion in action. In opening remarks, the Acting Director of the Health Promotion Division, Mrs. Mabel Kissiwa Asafo emphasized the need for consistent, deliberate efforts to make health services more accessible.
Partner organizations, including Sightsavers, UNICEF, WHO, and the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations, echoed the call for stronger collaboration.
Delivering the keynote address, the Acting Deputy Director-General Dr Caroline Reindorf Amissah highlighted progress made from disability-inclusive communication materials to nationwide training for health workers while stressing that more work lies ahead.
A major highlight was the official handover of Ghana’s membership certificate to the Ghana Health Service, Disability Health Equity Network (DHEN), a milestone that strengthens global collaboration and technical support for disability-inclusive health initiatives.
Personal testimonies from the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations offered a powerful reminder of the real-life impact of inclusive health policies. The event concluded with a symbolic group photo and a media engagement session, followed by on-site eye screening services sponsored by Third Eye-care.
The day ended with a clear message: disability inclusion is a right, not a privilege, and Ghana Health Service remains committed to ensuring equitable, respectful, and accessible health services for all.
