GHANA HEALTH SERVICE COUNCIL FAMILIARIZATION VISIT TO THE UPPER WEST REGION

As part of efforts to strengthen the healthcare system in Ghana, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) Council undertook a two-day working visit to the Upper West Region from 24th to 25th November 2025. The GHS Council serves as the governing body responsible for the overall management and oversight of the Ghana Health Service, the autonomous agency mandated to implement national health policies.
A two-member delegation from the GHS Council, led by the Regional Council Patron for the Upper West Region, Dr. Munawar Issahaque together with Mr. John Fosu Saben, Director of Internal Audit–GHS and Regional Parent of the Service, embarked on the visit to familiarize themselves with the regional health landscape.

The team was led by the Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Josephat A.Nyuzaghl,on various engagements within the region.
As part of the visit, the delegation paid a courtesy call on the Upper West Regional Minister, Hon. Lawyer Charles Lwanga Puozuing. The Minister expressed his delight at receiving the team, and both parties discussed several important issues aimed at improving healthcare delivery in the region.
The Council also engaged key stakeholders, including:
• Staff of the Regional Health Directorate
• Budget Management Centre (BMC) Heads
• District Directors of Health Services and Medical Superintendents
During these engagements, Dr. Munawar Issahaque inaugurated a seven-member Regional Health Committee Team, emphasizing the Council’s commitment to strengthening health governance at all levels.
In his welcome address, Dr. Josephat A. Nyuzaghl expressed his appreciation for the Council’s visit and wished them well in their mandate. He delivered a PowerPoint presentation outlining the region’s priority areas, which included:
• Strengthening maternal, neonatal and child health services
• Enhancing governance and accountability systems at all levels
• Reducing deaths and illnesses from vaccine-preventable diseases across the life course
He also highlighted key challenges facing the Regional Health Directorate, such as:
• Inadequate staff accommodation, especially in rural areas
• Persistent shortage of critical health professionals, including CHNs, medical officers, laboratory staff, specialists, and midwives
• Inadequate logistics and infrastructural limitations
Despite these challenges, Dr. Nyuzaghl affirmed the Directorate’s commitment to delivering quality healthcare to the people of the region.
Dr. Munawar Issahaque, speaking on behalf of the GHS Council, thanked the Regional Health Directorate for the well-organized engagement. He explained that the purpose of the visit was to obtain firsthand insight into the region’s challenges and help inform resource allocation priorities. He added that the visit also aimed to assess the state of primary healthcare delivery and strengthen dialogue between the GHS Council and the Regional Health Team.
The team, led by Dr. Nyuzaghl, visited several districts and health facilities, including:
• Upper West Regional Hospital
• Wa Municipal Hospital
• Loho CHPS Compound (Nadowli-Kaleo District)
• Daffiama Health Centre (DBI District)
• Lawra Municipal Hospital.
At each site, interactions and staff durbars were held, providing frontline health workers the opportunity to bring out key issues affecting their work and efforts to be made to address them.

Training on Oxygen Operations and Management Manual Held for Operationalisation of Regional PSA Plant.

The Upper West Regional Health Directorate on 10th November 2025, received a comprehensive Training on Oxygen Operations and Management Manual to support the operationalisation of the Regional Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Plant.

As part of efforts by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to strengthen the health system and ensure the delivery of quality healthcare across the country, a team from the GHS Headquarters was in the Upper West Region to train key technical staff on the Management of a new Oxygen Pressure Swing Absorption plant to be installed in the region for supply of all health facilities.

Participants included personnel from the Regional and Municipal Hospitals,Key staff of the Regional Health Directorate and other relevant technical staff.

The National Training Team was led by Mr. Robert Suapum, Madam Edna A. Nai, and Madam Bayaba Jamila from the GHS Headquarters.

In his welcome address, the Regional Director of Health Services (RDHS), Dr. Josephat A. Nyuzaghl, expressed his appreciation to the facilitators for their support and commitment. He stated that the Directorate is delighted to have experts take staff through the standard protocols and best practices in oxygen plant installation and management.

Dr. Nyuzaghl reiterated the Directorate’s commitment to ensuring a proper maintenance culture, stressing that “as a region, we shall take ownership and ensure our equipments are well maintained to provide quality oxygen for our clients.” He also urged participants to be attentive, ask questions and make the most of the training.

On his part, Mr. Robert Suapum, on behalf of the national team, commended the Regional Health Directorate for the swift organization of the training. He highlighted that, several PSA Plants have been acquired across the country, including the Upper West Region. He further encouraged the region to manage the plant efficiently ,both financially and technically and assured that ,national would continue to build the capacity of staff to sustain the project.

The training marks another significant step in strengthening the region’s health infrastructure and ensuring reliable oxygen supply to healthcare facilities across the Upper West Region.

Upper West Regional Health Directorate Receives Essential Equipment from FHI 360.

The Upper West Regional Health Directorate on 30th October, 2025 has received a set of essential items from Family Health International (FHI 360) to support health surveillance activities in the region.

The donated items included: Phone tablets, raincoats , flashlights among others. These supplies were provided under the U.S. Government–funded EpiC Global Health Security (GHS) Project to enhance data collection, analysis and reporting in the implementation of Event-Based Surveillance (EBS) across the Wa East, Wa West and Sissala West Districts.

Receiving the items on behalf of the Regional Director of Health Services,Mr. Simon Aabalekuu, the Regional Disease Surveillance Officer, expressed appreciation to FHI 360 and the EpiC project team for their continuous support.

He assured the donors that the items would be used for their intended purpose and maintained appropriately to ensure their longevity and effective use.

Middle Level Managers Training on Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI)

The Upper West Regional Health Directorate has commenced a 14-day capacity-building training for District and Sub-district staff on the Middle-Level Managers (MLM) course for the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI).

The training, being held across all eleven Districts in the Upper West Region, brings together key health staff actively involved in EPI activities. Participants include Disase Control Officers, Community Health Nurses, Midwives, Health Promotion Officers, Health Information Officers and other critical frontline health workers from both the peripheral and District levels.

The sessions are designed to be interactive and practical, focusing on strengthening participants’ knowledge and skills in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating immunization services. This initiative aims to enhance the overall performance of EPI in the region and ensure the delivery of quality immunization services to every eligible child.

The training which started on the 22nd of October,2025 is expected to end on 10th November, 2025.

District Directors of Health Services Group Honour Madam Florence Angsomwine - Retired DDHS

The District Directors of Health Services (DDHS) in the Upper West Region have honoured Madam Florence Angsomwine, former Municipal Director of Health Services for Jirapa, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to public health and her dedicated service to humanity.

The group organized a colourful send-off ceremony to celebrate her well-deserved retirement and to draw inspiration from her wealth of experience as a distinguished health professional.

Prior to her retirement, Madam Angsomwine served in several key health institutions, including the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Jirapa, the Upper West Regional Health Directorate, the Nadowli-Kaleo District Health Directorate and finally the Jirapa Municipal Health Directorate, where she gracefully retired.

Chairman of the DDHS group, Mr. Emmanuel Sanwouk, commended Madam Angsomwine for her exemplary leadership, describing her as both a mentor and a mother figure within the health fraternity. He assured her of the group’s continuous support and appealed to her to help mobilize other retired Directors to share their experiences and knowledge with those still in active service.

Representing the Regional Director of Health Services, Mr. Prosper M. Lana, Deputy Director of Administration, lauded Madam Angsomwine for her humility, selflessness and dedication throughout her years of service. He described her as a committed and down-to-earth leader who worked tirelessly for the advancement of quality healthcare delivery in Ghana.

On behalf of the Regional Health Directorate, Mr. Lana presented a Citation of Honour and an undisclosed amount of money to Madam Angsomwine in appreciation of her meritorious service to the Ghana Health Service and the people of the Upper West Region.

The ceremony brought together all District Directors of Health Services in the region, Dr. Opoku representing the Medical Superintendents and Madam Beatrice Tengan representing Public Health Nurses, among other dignitaries and staff.

In her remarks, Madam Florence Angsomwine, visibly filled with joy and gratitude expressed deep appreciation to the DDHS group, the Regional Health Directorate and all staff of the Ghana Health Service for their support and collaboration throughout her career. She urged her colleagues to remain united, committed, and passionate about improving healthcare delivery in the region.

She concluded by reaffirming her commitment to continue contributing to the health sector, saying:

“Though I am now a senior citizen, I will continue to support health service delivery in the Upper West Region.”
