Middle Level Managers Training on Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI)

The Upper West Regional Health Directorate has commenced a 14-day capacity-building training for District and Sub-district staff on the Middle-Level Managers (MLM) course for the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI).

The training, being held across all eleven Districts in the Upper West Region, brings together key health staff actively involved in EPI activities. Participants include Disease Control Officers, Community Health Nurses, Midwives, Health Promotion Officers, Health Information Officers and other critical frontline health workers from both the peripheral and District levels.

The sessions are designed to be interactive and practical, focusing on strengthening participants’ knowledge and skills in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating immunization services. This initiative aims to enhance the overall performance of EPI in the region and ensure the delivery of quality immunization services to every eligible child.

The training started from 22nd October and is expected to end on the 10th of November, 2025.

District Directors of Health Services Group Honour Madam Florence Angsomwine - Retired DDHS

The District Directors of Health Services (DDHS) in the Upper West Region have honoured Madam Florence Angsomwine, former Municipal Director of Health Services for Jirapa, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to public health and her dedicated service to humanity.

The group organized a colourful send-off ceremony to celebrate her well-deserved retirement and to draw inspiration from her wealth of experience as a distinguished health professional.

Prior to her retirement, Madam Angsomwine served in several key health institutions, including the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Jirapa, the Upper West Regional Health Directorate, the Nadowli-Kaleo District Health Directorate and finally the Jirapa Municipal Health Directorate, where she gracefully retired.

Chairman of the DDHS group, Mr. Emmanuel Sanwouk, commended Madam Angsomwine for her exemplary leadership, describing her as both a mentor and a mother figure within the health fraternity. He assured her of the group’s continuous support and appealed to her to help mobilize other retired Directors to share their experiences and knowledge with those still in active service.

Representing the Regional Director of Health Services, Mr. Prosper M. Lana, Deputy Director of Administration, lauded Madam Angsomwine for her humility, selflessness and dedication throughout her years of service. He described her as a committed and down-to-earth leader who worked tirelessly for the advancement of quality healthcare delivery in Ghana.

On behalf of the Regional Health Directorate, Mr. Lana presented a Citation of Honour and an undisclosed amount of money to Madam Angsomwine in appreciation of her meritorious service to the Ghana Health Service and the people of the Upper West Region.

The ceremony brought together all District Directors of Health Services in the region, Dr. Opoku representing the Medical Superintendents and Madam Beatrice Tengan representing Public Health Nurses, among other dignitaries and staff.

In her remarks, Madam Florence Angsomwine, visibly filled with joy and gratitude expressed deep appreciation to the DDHS group, the Regional Health Directorate and all staff of the Ghana Health Service for their support and collaboration throughout her career. She urged her colleagues to remain united, committed, and passionate about improving healthcare delivery in the region.

She concluded by reaffirming her commitment to continue contributing to the health sector, saying:

“Though I am now a senior citizen, I will continue to support health service delivery in the Upper West Region.”

UPPER WEST RDHS MONITORS ONGOING HPV VACCINATION CAMPAIGN IN SELECTED DISTRICTS

On Wednesday, 9th October 2025, the Upper West Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Josephat A. Nyuzaghl, took time out of his busy schedule to monitor the ongoing Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Campaign across selected Districts in the Upper West Region.

As part of the monitoring exercise, Dr. Nyuzaghl visited Wa Municipal, where he toured several schools including Ancilla School.
During the visits, he engaged with vaccination teams, students, and teachers to assess the progress of the campaign and address any concerns.

The RDHS and his team also visited the Nadowli-Kaleo District, where they made stops at Tangasia Primary School and Sombo R/C Basic School, among other Schools. Additionally, the team paid a visit to the Sombo Health Centre, where they interacted with health workers involved in the campaign.
Dr. Nyuzaghl stated that his visits were aimed at providing reassurance to community members, students and the general public about the safety, effectiveness and potency of the HPV vaccine. He reiterated the importance of the campaign in preventing cervical cancer among young girls.

At Nadowli-Kaleo, the RDHS was warmly received by the District Director of Health Services, Madam Phoebe Balagumyeteme, who accompanied the team during their visits in the district.

Upper West Region: Stakeholder Engagement on Human Papillomavirus(HPV) Vaccination Campaign.

The Upper West Regional Health Directorate has organized a one-day Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Campaign Stakeholder Engagement at the Regional Health Directorate in Wa on the 7th of October, 2025.

The engagement brought together key partners from the Regional Coordinating Council, Ghana Education Service, Traditional Authorities, Security Agencies, GPRTU, NGOs, Social Welfare, NCCE, FDA, and other Government Departments.

In his welcome address, Dr. Josephat A. Nyuzaghl, Regional Director of Health Services, commended all stakeholders for their presence and stated that the HPV vaccine is safe, effective, and crucial in preventing cervical cancer among girls aged 9 to 14 years. He called on all stakeholders, especially the GES and media to support and promote the upcoming vaccination campaign to ensure every eligible girl is reached.

Dr.Josephat also mentioned that ,Health workers have been trained to visit all schools and communities within the Upper West Region to get these young girls Vaccinated.

Speaking on behalf of the Regional Minister, Mr. James K. Donkor expressed appreciation for the Directorate’s preparations and encouraged continued collaboration, particularly with the GES and traditional leaders, for a successful campaign.

Mr. James Asuma of the Ghana Education Service reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to the exercise noting that sensitization activities are already underway across schools.

The Regional Director of the Food and Drugs Authority, Mr. Sunkpaal Kelvin also assured participants of the safety and potency of the HPV vaccine.

Dr. Collins Boateng Danquah, Deputy Director of Public Health gave a detailed presentation on the campaign strategies and the burden of cervical cancer.

The engagement concluded with an interactive session where stakeholders’ questions were addressed by the Regional Director and his team.

The Campaign starts from 7th to 11th October, 2025.
