After every child is born, it is important to assess the new baby right away. One of the first checks is the Apgar test. The Apgar test is a scoring system to evaluate the condition of the newborn at 1 minute and 5 minutes after birth. The healthcare provider or midwife and nurses will evaluate these signs and give a point value:
• Activity; muscle tone
• Pulse rate
• Grimace; reflex irritability
• Appearance; skin color
• Respiration
A brief, physical exam is done to check for obvious signs that the baby is healthy. Other procedures will be done over the next few minutes and hours. These may be done in the delivery room, in the nursery, or in your room, depending on the hospital policy and the condition of the baby. Some of these procedures include:
• Measurement of the temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate
• Measurement of weight, length, and head circumference. These measurements help find out if a baby's weight and measurements are normal for the number of weeks of pregnancy. Small or underweight babies and very large babies may need special attention and care.
• Cord care. The baby's umbilical cord stump will have a clamp. It needs to be kept clean and dry.
• Bath. Once a baby's temperature has stabilized, the first bath can be given.
• Eye care. Bacteria in the birth canal can infect a baby's eyes. Your baby will be given antibiotic or antiseptic eye drops or ointment either right after delivery or later in the nursery to prevent eye infection.
• Footprints. These are often taken and recorded in the medical record.
Before a baby leaves the delivery area, ID bracelets with matching numbers are placed on the baby and on you. Babies often have 2, on the wrist and ankle. These should be checked each time the baby comes or goes from your room.

Maternity care is one of the key services provided by Gimutten Reproductive and Child Health Organization. This is the type of health care provided to women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period. It is important for women to receive adequate prenatal care as it can help prevent complications during pregnancy and childbirth. Prenatal care includes regular checkups with a doctor or midwife, as well as tests and screenings to monitor the health of both mother and baby.

Meet Abba Sanyang, the founder and Director of Gimutten Reproductive and Child Health Organization!

Abba Sanyang is a nurse by profession with over twenty years work experience in the health sector of the Gambia. Abba is a visually impaired person. He is totally blind and his function as a nurse is the area of reproductive and child health. He Works at Banjulinding Health Center in the West Coast Region of the Gambia where he also serves as the head of the HIV counselor in the health center and provide counseling to individuals as well as victims living with HIV and Aids. Despite his disability, abba continues to change misconception and proof to the community and society at large that losing your vision should not prevent an individual in practicing nursing. Many believe that sight plays a great role in nursing Abba being blind has inspired his fellow nurses and visiting patients as he continues to perform effectively and independently in the antenatal clinics. His abilities to use other senses apart from sight, enable Abba to conduct and helped many women to undergo save delivery. As a blind person, He has successfully conducted more than 1000 delivery across the Gambia.

In the Gambia despite government intervention in providing health care, the problems face by women and children in our hospitals continue to face numerous barriers in accessing quality health services due to insufficient financial and logistical support, a deteriorating physical infrastructure, lack of supplies and equipment, shortages of adequately and appropriately trained health personnel, high attrition rates, and an inadequate referral system in the country.

Due to barriers face by women and children to access quality health services, this inspired Abba to dream for a Reproductive and Child Care Clinic, aimed to provide timely and relevant health services to women and children in the Gambia especially those women and children from marginalized communities including persons with disabilities who face a challenge to received proper and affordable health care system.

The dream of Abba Sanyang is to establish and construct a clinic in the Gambia with the vision to see that childbearing mothers and children have better and accessible inclusive health care services.

We solicit your partnership and support in the realization of this goal. Thank you for your partnership.
