25th May- Global Surgery Day: A Commitment to Equitable Surgical Care

On Global Surgery Day, Greece joins the international community in reaffirming that safe, timely, and affordable surgical care is essential to universal health coverage.

While advanced care is available in urban centers, disparities in access persist in rural and island regions. This day serves as a call to strengthen surgical infrastructure, expand training, and ensure no patient is left behind.

Hospitals, universities, and public health bodies across Greece participate through educational initiatives and outreach, promoting the principles of global surgery as defined by the WHO and the Lancet Commission.

We call on the surgical community to:

🔹 Advocate for stronger, inclusive systems
🔹 Collaborate nationally and internationally
🔹 Educate with equity in mind
🔹 Lead through action and innovation

Surgery saves lives—but only when access is just and universal.
