Day 3: As the ascending sun brightens the cliffs along the bay, we will depart from Agia Roumeli in our kayaks, heading along the coastline to Agios Pavlos for our first cappuccino stop. The small, 10th Century Byzantine chapel built in honor of St. Paul is a remarkably beautiful site! From Agios Pavlos, we continue along the coastline to Marmara Beach, one of our tastiest lunch stops in all of Crete. Along with a delicious lunch, Marmara Beach offers some incredible cliff-jumping opportunities from the wind-carved marble rocks. We believe our friend unofficially holds the record for highest cannonball on Crete. See pic 6!
After lunch, we head out and paddle to the water-access-only beach of Sweet Water, where the freshwater springs bubbling out of the sand provide a unique experience. We dock our boats for the day, set up our first night's camp on the beach and prepare for the beautiful 2 mile trek to many people's favorite town, Luotro. Rounding the point to catch your first glimpse of this idyllic town has been a highlight of the trip for all past participants. We won’t ruin the moment by saying any more now- you’ll just have to see for yourself!
The hike is well worth it for happy hour at our favorite seaside taverna and another night of diving into an authentic Greek dining experience. Eat and drink as much as you’d like because the journey back to camp entails a fun ride on a night taxi boat.
