Off season 💙
The longer you are a student of the sport, the more you understand that in order to come back stronger, you need some different intentionality in your training process after the season.
For excited (or fearful?) new and veteran athletes, letting your fitness, training volume, and rigorous routine go can feel unnerving. You may be eager to build on your strengths of the season, or likely focused on fixing some weaknesses. But, the story is long, and best navigated with curiosity and open arms than control and fear.
I am a big believer in a “structured” off season, but it should look completely different than an official training block.
How?
More focused on moving for fun. Try new things, say “yes” to activities with friends.
Learn new things and develop your techniques in the sport.
Uncover and work on other disciplines that greatly impact your training— sleep, nutrition, hydration, and your spiritual/mental/emotional habits.
STRENGTH train. Always! And in this block, start with addressing imbalances and weaknesses- then building a strong foundation.
Know WHAT to do and WHY you are doing things. I highly recommend staying with your coach year round to keep your performance potential ball always moving forward. And a coach will help you not try to “win” the off-season in a way that it’s detrimental to your upcoming goals.
