當狗或貓癲癇發作時，通常會出現以下一種或多種症狀︰

如果癲癇持續發作，或超過5分鐘仍無法自行停止，動物可能會面臨永久性腦部損傷，甚至是死亡的風險。

😖 Is my animal having a seizure?
When a dog or cat is having a seizure, it usually presents with any or a combination of the following symptoms:
- Uncontrollable shaking and tremors
- Eyes glazing over
- Loss of consciousness
- Falling down, then jerking or paddling violently
- Focal twitching of any part of the body
- Champing
- Drooling
- Uncontrolled urination and/or defecation

If the seizure is prolonged or even not able to stop by self after more than 5 minutes, the animal is at risk of permanent brain damage or even death.

[感謝主人信任💕] Buffy是一隻1.7公斤的小狗，患有幽門阻塞，並由我們的腫瘤科團隊診斷出幽門部位有阻塞性腫塊（幼針抽取細胞化驗顯示可能為肉瘤）。牠的主人曾對手術的風險和侵入性表示擔憂，但向我們的小動物外科專科獸醫 Dr. Stephen Martin 諮詢並了解此手術是牠恢復正常生活的最佳機會後，最終制定了治療方案。

在手術過程中，Dr. Stephen 確認腫塊包覆了幽門，並與總膽管緊密相連。

為了切除腫塊，Dr. Stephen進行了全幽門切除手術（畢羅氏第一型吻合術），並將胃與十二指腸重新連接。

此外，手術中亦進行十二指腸造口術，透過導管檢查總膽管（CBD），並確認其暢通無阻。

儘管術後初期恢復良好，Buffy還是出現了低血糖發作（疑似傾倒症候群）和高膽紅素性腦病的併發症，所幸凡的是這些問題都成功以藥物控制。 Dr. Stephen 之後亦為牠進行了十二指腸鏡檢查，檢視吻合部位，確保已完全癒合。

我們很高興，最終檢查顯示Buffy的狀態良好，臨床表現正常，食慾、體重持續改善、噁心與嘔吐症狀已完全消失。組織學檢查證實胃腸道基質瘤（GIST）已完全切除。這一成果離不開外科、護理及技術團隊、麻醉科和急症及重症監護科團隊的共同努力。

[Thank you for the owner's trust💕] Buffy, a 1.7 kg dog, was suffering from pyloric obstruction and was diagnosed by our oncology team with an obstructive pyloric mass (FNA suggested sarcoma). His owners were concerned about the risks and invasiveness of surgery, but after consultation and reassurance by our Specialist in Small Animal Surgery, Dr. Stephen Martin, as surgery offered the best chance for him to live a normal life, a plan was put in place.

At surgery, the mass was confirmed to envelop the pylorus, but also there was very close association with the bile duct. (Mass: orange circle, Common bile duct: blue arrow, duodenum: white arrow, antrum: black arrow). The mass was resected via total pylorectomy (Billroth type 1) and gastroduodenal anastomosis. A duodenotomy was also performed to catheterise the CBD and confirm patency.

Despite an initial excellent recovery, he experienced complications including hypoglycemic episodes (suspected ‘dumping’ syndrome) and hyperbilirubinemia encephalopathy that were successfully medically managed. Dr. Stephen also performed a follow-up gastroduodenoscopy to review the anastomosis site, confirming complete healing.

We are happy to report that final checkup shows a happy and clinically normal dog with day-to-day improvements in appetite, weight-gain, resolution of nausea/vomiting. Histology confirmed a completely excised GIST. A big combined effort by the surgery, nursing, ER, and technician teams, the anaesthesia department, and the ICU and wards teams.

Does a heart murmur in dogs mean they have heart disease?

A heart murmur is an abnormal sound heard during a heartbeat, often described as a whooshing noise. It occurs when blood flows turbulently through the heart or its vessels. While a murmur can be a sign of heart disease, it doesn’t always mean your animal has a serious problem. Some murmurs are innocent or physiological, especially in young animals, and may resolve with age. Others may indicate structural heart issues like valve defects, congenital abnormalities, or cardiomyopathy. To determine the cause and significance, your veterinarian may recommend further tests such as echocardiography, chest X-rays, biomarker measurement. Identifying whether a murmur is harmless or linked to heart disease is essential for guiding treatment and monitoring. Early detection allows for better management and can improve your animal’s quality of life. Regular check-ups are key to understanding and tracking any changes in heart health.

Di Di 是一隻 11 歲的唐狗🐾，平日喜歡與主人一起享受戶外時光。牠因嘔吐和精神萎靡被緊急送往豐盈動物專科及急症醫院（HVSEH）的急症室。抵達時，牠正處於危險狀態，十分虛弱、脫水且出現休克（一種危及生命的狀況，當身體無法獲得足夠的血液灌流，導致器官缺乏必要的營養和氧氣），於是我們的獸醫和護士立即展開救治。

Di Di最初被安置在隔離病房，以確保其他患者、主人以及護理人員的安全。在等待進一步檢查結果期間，急症室團隊對牠進行持續監護以排查鈎端螺旋體病的可能。透過輸液、氧氣支援、疼痛管理、改善電解質失衡、24小時監護和放置鼻胃管以確保胃部舒適和營養補給，使Di Di病情漸趨穩定。

化驗結果顯示異物吞食的可能性很大，我們的小動物外科專科獸醫 Dr. Stephen Martin隨即為Di Di 安排了腹部超聲波檢查。結果發現牠的空腸（小腸的一部分）疑似梗塞，因此決定進行腹部手術。

手術的時候， Dr. Stephen在腸道內找到一根栗米棒🌽。由於阻塞部位的腸道組織損傷嚴重，所以醫生為Di Di 進行了切除（將組織或器官切除的外科手術）與吻合手術（將兩段健康的管狀結構（如腸道）進行外科連接的手術）。

手術後兩日，Di Di出現了併發症。牠感染了敗血性腹膜炎，這很可能是由於腸道情況嚴重所誘發的。在 Dr. Stephen的專業帶領下，醫療團隊進行了第二次手術，成功挽救了Di Di的生命！

在手術後的四天裡，Di Di展現了驚人的意志力和康復的決心，這有賴主人給了滿滿的愛💕、奉獻與支持。儘管歷經磨難，Di Di仍是一隻溫順的狗狗，牠是乖巧的患者，與我們的護士和醫生建立了深厚的感情。我們非常高興見證牠從命懸一線的狀態，變回歡快吠叫、大口進食的快樂狗狗！

犬貓左側充血性心臟衰竭
您的動物是否有持續咳嗽或呼吸困難的情況？這可能與心臟有關！

左側充血性心臟衰竭，是由於心臟無法有效地將血液泵送至全身，引致血液在左心房淤積的疾病。左心房壓力升高，會導致液體在肺部組織中積聚，這種液體積聚會引起呼吸困難，部分情況下亦會出現咳嗽。

這種情況可見於先天性心臟缺陷的患者，也可能出現在後天性心臟病的情況中。心臟衰竭可發生於任何年齡層，如松鼠狗、芝娃娃和玩具貴婦狗較容易患上瓣膜疾病（二尖瓣疾病）並可能因此發展成心臟衰竭。

以下是動物可能患有心臟衰竭的症狀：
- 咳嗽
- 呼吸頻率增加
- 呼吸困難
- 精神萎靡
- 運動耐受性下降
- 昏厥
- 牙齦或舌頭顏色變為藍灰色
- 食慾減退
- 體重出現異常變化（增加或減少）

識別犬隻難產的緊急狀況
什麼是難產？
難產是指分娩困難或異常，可能會對母犬或幼犬的健康造成重大風險。這是獸醫常見的緊急情況，一般都需要立即介入，以確保母犬和幼犬的安全。

由於先天性生理限制，有些犬種出現難產的風險較高。例如︰法國鬥牛犬、波士頓爹利犬、芝娃娃、八哥以及老虎狗。但事實上任何品種的狗都有難產的可能。

難產的緊急情況
難產可通過以下一項或多項臨床症狀來識別：
- 滯產（分娩時間過長）︰如果分娩持續超過兩小時仍未生出幼犬，就是難產的症狀。
- 陰道分泌物異常︰綠色或惡臭的分泌物可能表示有問題。
- 子宮收縮乏力︰子宮無法正常收縮，常因荷爾蒙失衡或遺傳因素所致。
- 胎位不正︰幼犬在產道中位置不正確，可能導致阻塞性難產。
- 陰道出血
- 母犬精神不振、嗜睡 +/- 發燒（體溫 >39.4°C）

早期介入的重要性
早期識別與及時干預對保障母犬和幼犬的健康至關重要。延遲治療可能導致新生幼犬死亡率上升，增加母犬患上併發症的機會。若懷疑發生難產，請立即尋求獸醫協助，以提高救治母犬和幼犬的生存成功率。

Identifying Dystocia in Dogs as an Emergency
What is Dystocia?
Dystocia is defined as difficult or abnormal labor, which can pose significant health risks to both the dam (mother dog) and her puppies. It is a common emergency in veterinary practice, often requiring immediate intervention to ensure the safety of both mother and babies.
Certain breeds are at a higher risk of experiencing dystocia due to congenital physical limitations. These include French Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Chihuahuas, Pugs, and Bulldogs. But any breed can experience dystocia.

Recognizing Dystocia as an Emergency
Dystocia can be identified by having one or more of the following clinical signs, including:
• Prolonged Labor: If labor lasts more than 2 hours without delivering a puppy, it is a sign of dystocia.
• Abnormal Vaginal Discharge: Green or foul-smelling discharge can indicate a problem.
• Uterine Inertia: The failure of the uterus to contract properly, often due to hormonal imbalances or genetic factors.
• Malpresentation of the Fetus: Puppies positioned incorrectly in the birth canal can cause obstructive dystocia.
• Bleeding from va**na
• Mother dog is depressed, lethargy +/- having fever (body temperature >39.4°C)

Importance of Early Intervention
Early recognition and intervention are critical to improving outcomes for both the mother and her puppies. Delayed treatment can lead to increased neonatal mortality and complications for the mother. If you suspect dystocia, seek immediate veterinary assistance to improve outcomes for your animal.

預防與及早干預的重要性🌞

中暑是一種危及生命的疾病，需要立即處理。延誤治療可能導致多個器官衰竭、瀰漫性血管內凝血(DIC)，最嚴重的情況下甚至可能導致死亡。預防中暑是保護狗隻最有效的方法。具體措施包括：
- 避免處於高溫環境：在高溫時段，請將狗隻留在室內，並提供充足的飲用水💧與遮蔽處
- 限制運動量︰在炎熱天氣下，應避免劇烈活動
- 切勿將狗隻獨留車內：即使車窗微開，車內溫度仍會迅速上升
- 留意高風險犬隻：對於容易中暑的品種或個體，請特別留意牠們的狀況

如果您發現您的動物中暑，請用室溫水弄濕牠的毛髮來幫助降溫。❌切勿使用冰塊降溫，也不要強迫牠喝水。與此同時，請儘快將動物送往動物醫院以接受適當的緊急醫療處理。

Importance of Prevention and Early Intervention 🌞

Heatstroke is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate attention. Delaying in treatment can result in multiple organ failure, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and in the most severe cases may even death. Preventing heatstroke is the best way to protect your dog. This can be done by:
• Avoid Hot Environments: Keep your dog indoors during peak heat hours and provide plenty of water💧and shade.
• Limit Exercise: Avoid strenuous activities during hot weather.
• Never Leave Dogs in Cars: Even with windows cracked, cars can quickly become deadly hot.
• Monitor At-Risk Dogs: Pay extra attention to breeds and individuals that are more susceptible to heatstroke.

If you notice your animal is having heatstroke, cool down your animal by wetting its fur with room-temperature water. ❌ Don’t use ice for cooling or force your animal to drink water. In the meantime, bring your animal to the vet for proper medical emergency treatments as soon as possible.

[貓狗誤吞異物要留意‼️]
Ema 是一隻 2 歲的緬因貓，當主人發現牠吞下了一段約 3 厘米長的細繩後，緊急送往我們的急症室。這隻好奇的貓咪過去曾因誤食異物而接受過多次手術。幸好Ema的主人迅速採取行動，才能使我們的獸醫和護理團隊能夠透過催吐成功取出異物。

狗和貓都是充滿好奇心的動物，牠們可能會吞食異物導致機械性阻塞胃腸道。如果不及時治療，可能會引起危及生命的併發症。

主人必須注意以下的一些常見異物：
1. 玉米芯
2. 縫衣針
3. 襪子、內衣及其他布料
4. 硬幣
5. 肉骨頭
6. 線和細繩
7. 髮圈
8. 玩具

如果您懷疑您的貓狗吞下了異物，或觀察到以下症狀，請儘快就醫🏥：
1. 嘔吐
2. 食慾不振
3. 腹部疼痛

[Watch out for foreign body ingestion in cats and dogs‼️]
Ema is a 2-year-old Maine C**n who was rushed to our Emergency Department after her owners noticed she was missing a twine of around 3 cm in length. This curious cat has a history of previous surgeries, all for the same reason of ingesting foreign bodies. Due to the quick action of Ema’s owner, our vet and nursing team were able to induce vomiting and successfully remove the foreign object.

Dogs and cats are curious animals, and they may ingest objects that may mechanically obstruct their gastrointestinal tract. Often times, when left untreated may cause life-threatening complications.

Here are some common foreign bodies owners must watch out for :
1. Corn cob
2. Sewing needles
3. Socks and underwear and other fabric
4. Coins
5. Meat bones
6. Thread and strings
7. Hair ties
8. Toys

If you suspect your animal has swallowed a foreign body object or observe the following signs, please seek veterinary care as soon as possible🏥:
1. Vomiting
2. Loss of appetite
3. Abdominal pain
4. Lethargy
5. Diarrhea
