Before Global Surgical Expedition existed, before international surgical trips, before any of the numbers, there was a small-town doctor in Quincy and a young boy watching how medicine could change lives. In this article, Dr. David Rapp, founder of GSE, shares how time spent at his grandfather’s clinic shaped his view of healthcare, service, and responsibility.📝

Those early memories didn’t just stick — they grew into a mission that now brings surgical care to people around the world who would otherwise go without it.🌍 What makes this story even more meaningful is that some of Dr. Rapp’s grandfather’s surgical instruments are still in use today—now thousands of miles from Quincy—helping patients in need. It’s a powerful reminder that impact can span generations.✨ Read the full story here: https://buff.ly/dvc5lJg

Behind every successful surgery is a team of nurses who keep the OR running smoothly from start to finish.💙

🥼 Scrub Nurses. Set up instruments, stay sterile, and anticipate every move during surgery. They’re the surgeon’s right hand in the OR.

🥼Circulating RNs. Keep the big picture in check — patient safety, documentation, supplies, and making sure the room runs like it should.

🥼Pre-Op Nurses. Prep patients for surgery, review charts, calm nerves, and make sure everything is ready before the first incision.

🥼PACU Nurses – Phase 1. Monitor patients as they wake up from anesthesia, manage pain, and watch closely for complications.

🥼PACU Nurses – Phase 2. Help patients transition to recovery, provide education, and make sure they’re stable and ready for discharge.

Every role matters. Every nurse matters. To all the nurses who volunteer with Global Surgical Expedition — thank you.✨ Our trips simply would not be possible without your expertise, support, time, and dedication. You show up, step in, and make life-changing care happen.🤩

Day 4 in the OR and this team is still going strong 💪

Today alone: 10 patients cared for in surgery and 6 seen in clinic. And the impact stretches across so many specialties — urology, urogynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, and general surgery. That’s a whole lot of skill under one roof.🏥

But what really makes it special? The people. From anesthesia to pre-op, PACU to scrub nurses and techs, circulators, surgical assistants, and surgeons — everyone jumps in wherever they’re needed. A shared mission to help as many patients as possible.💙

We’re beyond grateful to be here, doing this work, together.🇭🇳

Our GSE team traded scrubs for hiking shoes and spent time together on a beautiful hike in Honduras.🥾Fresh air, quiet views, sore legs, and a lot of gratitude.🌄These moments matter. They give the team space to reset, reconnect, and come back grounded for the work ahead.☀️

Care for patients starts with caring for each other. And sometimes, that looks like a trail, a deep breath, and a reminder of why we do this work.💙

Another full, meaningful day for Team GSE. From the OR to the clinic, this group showed up with care, focus, and a whole lot of heart.💙

Today’s impact:
✅18 procedures completed
✅26 patients seen in clinic

Behind every number is a person who trusted us with their care — and a team that didn’t take that lightly. Long days like this are why we’re here, and why this work matters so much.😍

Day two in the OR in Honduras, and the pace didn’t let up — not even a little.

The OR team grabbed a quick breakfast together before heading right back in for the next patient. Fuel up, scrub in, repeat.🍳

Here’s how day two shook out:
✅ 13 procedures completed
✅ 28 patients seen in clinic
✅ 3 operating rooms running at the same time

Every person on this team is locked in — in the ORs, in clinic, and everywhere in between, making sure patients get the care they’ve been waiting for.💙

Huge thanks to our partners at One World Surgery for making this work possible. Because of this collaboration, more patients are getting timely, life-changing surgical care.🇭🇳

First day in the OR in Honduras, and there’s no easing into it.👏

Drs. Schenkman, Yeaman, and Grossgold spent the morning talking through cases from clinic, while our team worked together to map out surgical plans for the days ahead. Dr. Erik Grossgold and Liz Argenbright, PA-C, were hard at work performing cystoscopies, and every room was buzzing with focus and teamwork.

Here’s what day one looked like:
✅11 surgeries completed
✅64 patients seen in clinic
✅16 cystoscopies performed

That’s a big start, and it sets the tone for a packed week ahead. We’re proud to be on the ground in Honduras alongside our partners at One World Surgery, doing the work that matters and showing up for patients who’ve been waiting far too long for care.💙

More to come. This team is just getting started. 💪🌍

Our GSE team of 23 has officially landed in Honduras after a long travel day. 🇭🇳We are on the ground, getting settled, and getting oriented at the One World Surgery facility.

Monday morning, there is no easing in. We are jumping straight into patient visits and surgeries across urology, urogynecology, and general surgery.🏥

This trip is made possible through our partnership with One World Surgery, which funds and operates the Holy Family Surgery Center on the NPH (Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos) ranch, about an hour outside Tegucigalpa. The center has three operating rooms, clinics, and overnight bays, plus dental and eye clinics, all under one roof. https://oneworldsurgery.org/honduras/

Big week ahead. Grateful for strong partners, skilled teams, and the chance to get to work.💙

Meet our Volunteers: Melissa Gillespie, MSN, PMHNP-BC.👋 Melissa has been part of the GSE family since 2020, joining just before the pandemic, and has returned on countless trips to Belize and Honduras.🌍 That kind of consistency matters. And we are incredibly thankful for the time, skill, and heart she continues to give.💙

Her why is simple and powerful: Seeing patients return years later to tell us how surgery changed their lives.🤍 Helping people who’ve lived with pain, incontinence, or isolation because their communities lack basic surgical resources. Showing up for patients who travel hours just for a chance at care.

She’s seen conditions we rarely encounter in the U.S.—prolapsed organs, massive bladder stones—issues that quietly steal dignity, income, and quality of life. GSE steps in where care simply doesn’t exist. She’ll be heading back to Honduras again soon with GSE—because once you see this work up close, it stays with you.🇭🇳 We are deeply grateful for her dedication, compassion, and the countless lives she’s touched since 2020. This is what commitment looks like.👏

Looking at GSE’s impact over time, we're reminded why we care so much about tracking outcomes and doing this work thoughtfully. Over the years, Global Surgical Expedition has:

💙 Delivered millions of dollars in surgical care.
💙Deployed dozens of surgical teams around the world.
💙Performed thousands of life-changing surgeries.
💙Trained hundreds of providers and students.
💙Maintained a consistently low complication rate.
💙Beyond the care itself, we've invested heavily in education, local partnerships, and donated equipment — because sustainable progress matters just as much as the surgery day.

Every stat represents real people: patients who can return to work, caregivers who can show up for their families, and local providers gaining skills that last long after a trip ends. We're proud of what’s been done — and even more motivated by what’s still ahead.🌍
