Kolyma Snow Sheep and Okhotsk Snow Sheep
On September 6, we set out across the waters of the Sea of Okhotsk towards Cape Vostochny. During the day, we covered about 160 kilometers along the harsh northern coast and spent the night right on the water — in the quiet Siglan Bay, where cliffs drop into the sea and you can feel the breath of wild Kolyma.
The climb to the hunting area was not very high — only about 250 meters, but the terrain turned out to be treacherous. At times, I had to literally crawl on all fours up a slope resembling a vertical wall. At one point, I looked back down — my legs trembled with fear. The guide gave me a stick as additional support, which made it easier. Physically the route was manageable, but psychologically it was a real challenge.
On the morning of September 7, we continued the ascent. An hour and a half of climbing, another 250 meters of elevation gain — and we reached the summit. Soon after, we spotted a worthy ram. The distance was 665 meters. As usual, I relied on my Proof Research .338 Lapua Magnum. The shot was precise and confident — the Kolyma snow sheep trophy was secured.
Later, we returned closer to Magadan to hunt the Okhotsk snow sheep. First came a three-and-a-half-hour drive by car, followed by a 3.5 km ascent into the mountains. The route turned out to be not difficult, and the weather was favorable.
On September 10, we spotted a group of rams. Among them stood out an older male: his horns were already partially broken, yet they still looked powerful and impressive. The distance was 330 meters. The shot was steady, and the second trophy of this expedition was taken.
