The European Hematology Association's (EHA) Lighting the Flame program promotes hematology to medical graduates and early-career residents across Europe through online lessons and real-life sessions. This year's Summer University, organized as part of the program, was held in Budapest with active participation from the faculty of the Department of Pathology and Experimental Cancer Research and the Department of Internal Medicine and Hematology at Semmelweis University.
Fifty students from 15 European countries and a team of more than ten international educators spent a full day of the three-day event at Semmelweis University. This year, two medical students from our university were selected to participate in the program. Dr. Péter Nyirády, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, welcomed the guests at the opening ceremony held in the Department of Pathology and Experimental Cancer Research, followed by Dr. Csaba Bödör, Professor at the Department of Pathology and Experimental Cancer Research, who represented the Hungarian Society of Haematology and Transfusion. Working in small groups, the students participated in a hemato-pathological morphology workshop where they were introduced to state-of-the-art molecular onco-hematological diagnostic tools. At the Department of Internal Medicine and Hematology, they observed the hematology-focused workings of the department and shadowed patient examinations. Dr. Bence Bátai, an internal medicine resident at the Department of Internal Medicine and Hematology and a Young EHA ambassador, played a key role in organizing the event. Dr. Imre Bodó, Dr. Csaba Bödör, Dr. Réka Mózes, Dr. Richárd Kiss, and Dr. Gergely Szombath from our university contributed to EHA's Lighting the Flame Summer University as presenters and mentors.
