What is an Autism Champion?
An Autism Champion is a business or organisation committed to becoming autism-friendly by upholding key standards and making easy, practical accommodations. Together, we can support individuals with autism and make their experience more comfortable and accessible.

What the project is and our reasoning behind undertaking the project
The project was initially about creating a disco for adults with intellectual disabilities in Ballina and surrounding areas but has since turned into so much more.
The project is about creating a safe space for adults to socialize, dance, sing and play music with friends from their own groups and other people in thier community, while also affording them artistic input to the discos décor and music through arts and DJing workshops. We have provided several different creative based workshops withen the Arts to allow people in this community an opportunity to persue passions and interests while actively engaging with the greater community.
The realization of the need for this disco and workshops came from discovering That’s Life, an award-winning arts and personal development program of the Brothers of Charity Services, Galway. They have created a service for people with an intellectual disability to have opportunities to discover and realize their full artistic potential through working with established artists and participating in high quality programs.
We found the work of That’s Life absolutely inspiring, but we were disappointed to find out the significant difference in the quality of opportunities from Galway to Ballina. While we where inspired by That’s Life we also are aware that our direction while similar in the sense of creative partcipation and inclusion, we also want to address many physical, social and educational changes in our community through continued projects, events, seminars that will support our whole community to create a better understanding and connection between all members of our community for the benifit of everyone.
We are delighted by the response we have recieved so far from participants, families, carer’s and the greater public and are delighted to be running our third event of the year this December 19th (Christmas Flow disco).
Many people with disabilities unfortunetely do not get equal opportunity to persue thier passions in the same capacity as those without. Alot of the time College, 3rd level education, sports clubs and social clubs may not be an option for whatever reason be it additional needs, social anxiety ect... (especially those with ASD). This leaves alot of these amazing members of our society without an outlet to unlock the many ABILITIES they possess, we have seen in all our workshops (DJ, ART, DANCE) so much talent and willingness to learn and progress we have truely been inspired to provide more opportunities to these people who so dearly deserve them. Through the Arts and our many projects to come we hope to create a greater understanding surrounding different disabilities and the amazing people who live with them, where we can all work together to become more inclusive and truely intergrate the whole community. All funds generated via the events and fundraising will be directly used for inclusive projects first looking at providing a wheelchair swing in Ballina along with many othert idea’s we look forward to discussing and implementing in 2020.
