SELF ABDOMINAL THRUST
What to do when you're choking and no one is around.
Step 1
Stay Calm
Don’t panic! You need focus and fast action. Recognize signs of choking: can’t speak, cough, or breathe.
Step 2
Make a Fist
Place your dominant hand in a fist, thumb side in, just above your belly button.
Step 3
Grab and Push Inward/Upward
Use your other hand to grab your fist.
Thrust inward and upward sharply under your ribcage, in and up
Step 4
Use a Solid Surface
Can’t get enough force?
Lean over a chair edge, counter, or railing and thrust your upper abdomen against it — fast and hard.
Step 5
Repeat Until Object Is Expelled
Keep thrusting until you can cough or breathe again.
Call emergency services if you're still in danger.
Remember: Knowing this can be the difference between life and death.
