🎨 Beyond Just a Drawing: Seeing Brain Development in Action
At NDT Inishowen, we often use the 'Draw a Person' Test (Aston Index) to track a child’s progress. These aren't just doodles—they are "windows" into a child’s internal neurological map. 🧠✨

When a child’s physical "inner compass" is shaky, their whole world feels unstable.

Look at this incredible journey of an 8-year-old boy who started with NDT INISHOWEN last September:

🏃‍♂️ "The ground isn’t moving anymore."

In September, he was facing an uphill battle with balance, coordination, and the basic mechanics of literacy. Imagine trying to learn to read or write while feeling like the floor beneath you is constantly shifting.

When a child’s brain is working "double-time" just to keep them upright, there is very little energy left to process letters on a page. You can see it in his early drawing—the lack of a "body" reflects that lack of physical groundedness.

🌟 The Breakthrough
By March, the transformation is undeniable. Through the INPP programme, we've been integrating the primitive reflexes that govern his stability:

Physical Freedom: He can now run without the sensation of the ground moving beneath him!

Improved Literacy: His reading has taken a significant leap forward.

Legible Writing: His handwriting is now clear and easy to read. ✍️📖

Notice the March drawing: Look at the detail, the fingers, the hair, and the clear body structure. This is the visual proof of a brain that finally feels "at home" in its own body.

🛠️ The Journey Continues
We still have work to do, but with focused, individual support from NDTINISHOWEN, we are getting there. By stabilizing his physical world, we have unlocked his ability to learn and thrive. Onwards and upwards 😊

📞 Is your child "working too hard" just to stay balanced?
If your child struggles with coordination, reading, or feeling "unsteady," neurodevelopmental therapy could be the key to unlocking their potential.

The myth: To learn better, kids need to sit still and focus.
The reality: Sitting still is actually putting their brains to sleep.

After 20 minutes of sitting, a child’s brain is "quiet"—it’s ticking along, but it’s not fully switched on. But give them 20 minutes of movement?

💥 The brain lights up.
🩸 Blood flow surges.
🧠 Networks activate.
⚡ Processing speeds up.

Movement isn’t a distraction from learning; it’s the fuel for it. If we want better focus and sharper minds, we don’t start with a chair. We start with movement. 🏃‍♂️✨

Little Movements, BIG Impacts!

I am absolutely beaming for this family today! Look at what was achieved this evening.

Normally, a simple task like building one jigsaw puzzle causes frustration and meltdowns. It’s a hurdle that can feel impossible to clear. But tonight? Total transformation.

This superstar completed all of these independently. The most important part? He truly enjoyed himself. He stayed calm, stayed focused, and at the end, he simply said: “I had fun.” At NDTINISHOWEN, we focus on those small, intentional movements that ripple outward to create massive social and emotional transitions. Seeing a child move from a place of distress to a place of genuine pride and joy is exactly why I do what I do.

How can I help your family?
If you see your child struggling with similar frustrations or developmental hurdles, let’s see if we can make those same "big impacts" together.

👉 Take the first step: You can complete my Free Online Screening Questionnaire to see if Neuro-Developmental Therapy , NDTINISHOWEN, is the right fit for your child.

I spent a brilliant day stepping out of the teacher role and into the student seat for some intensive revision on neurodevelopmental therapy training! 🧠

After a deep dive back into the INPP School’s Programme, I am feeling refreshed, empowered, and more convinced than ever that movement is the key to unlocking learning.

The science is fascinating: when we help children integrate their physical development, we clear the "neurological hurdles" that make sitting still, reading, and concentrating so difficult.

By understanding the "why" behind the movement, we can create a more holistic, supportive environment for every student.

🧠 The "Sixth Sense" Your Child Can’t Live Without
Did you know there’s a sensory system more vital to brain development than sight or sound?

Meet Proprioception.

It’s our body’s ability to resist gravity, use muscle control, and maintain balance. While other senses take a break, proprioception is working 24/7—making it the #1 fuel for brain growth! 🚀

👨‍🚀 The "Space Dyslexia" Connection
Gravity is so essential that without it, our brains actually struggle. NASA discovered that astronauts returning from space often experienced "space dyslexia"—mental processing challenges similar to learning disabilities—because their brains weren't resisting gravity!

📉 The Digital Trap
When children spend hours sitting still in front of:

📺 TVs

💻 Computers

📱 Smartphones
..they aren't just "relaxing." They are missing out on the vital gravitational stimulus their brains need to thrive. Movement = Brain Power.

👁️ Visual Perception: Part 2 – The Final Pieces of the Puzzle!

Welcome back! In our last post, we looked at how the brain recognizes shapes and remembers letters. Today, we’re finishing our deep dive into Visual Perception by looking at the final three skills.

As a Neurodevelopmental Therapist, I often find that when a child "hates" reading or seems "clumsy," one of these three skills is the missing link.

5️⃣ Visual Figure-Ground
The "Hidden Object" Skill. This is the ability to locate something specific while it is surrounded by a busy background.

6️⃣ Visual Closure
The "Mental Completion" Skill. The ability to recognize an object, letter, or number even if you can only see part of it.

7️⃣ Visual Sequential Memory
The "Order Matters" Skill. The ability to remember a series of forms (letters, numbers, or objects) in a specific order.

Why does Ndtinishowen focus on this?

At Ndtinishowen, we look at the whole child.

Visual perception isn't just about the eyes; it's about the vestibular and proprioceptive systems working together to help the brain make sense of the world.

When these systems are "in sync," learning becomes easier, and frustration levels drop!

🪥 The Morning Brain Hack You Didn't Know You Needed!

Want a simple way to level up your brain health before you even leave the bathroom? From today, try switching hands!

If you’re a righty, use your left. If you’re a lefty, go right. It feels weird (and you might get toothpaste on your nose), but that’s the point! Using your non-dominant hand forces your brain to step out of "autopilot."

Why do it?

Neuroplasticity: It encourages your brain to build new pathways.

Whole-Brain Power: It gets both hemispheres working together.

Stay Sharp: Like a workout for your mind, it keeps your brain healthy and adaptable.

Give it a shot and tell me—how many times did you miss your mouth? 😂👇

👁️ More Than Just "Seeing":

Why Visual Perception Matters!

Ever wonder why some children struggle to tell a b from a d, or find it hard to copy notes from a whiteboard? As a Neurodevelopmental Therapist, I see how these "hidden" skills form the foundation for reading, writing, math, and even basic independence.

Visual perception isn't about how clearly your child sees (eyesight); it’s about how their brain interprets what they see! 🧠✨

Here are the first 4 (of 7) vital visual skills.

1️⃣ Visual Discrimination
The "Spot the Difference" Skill. This is the ability to notice tiny details and tell the difference between shapes, letters, or numbers while ignoring "visual noise."

2️⃣ Visual Memory
The "Mental Snapshot" Skill. The ability to remember what you’ve seen after it’s gone.

3️⃣ Visual Spatial Relationships
The "Where is it?" Skill. This helps children understand where objects are in relation to themselves and others—even if they are flipped or turned.

4️⃣ Visual Form Constancy
The "Big or Small, I Know You" Skill. Recognizing a shape or letter no matter its size, color, or font.

Does your child struggle with any of these areas? Stay tuned for Part 2, where we’ll dive into the final three skills!

As Spring approaches, it’s the perfect time to start a new journey of support and guidance for your child’s development.

Many parents see their children struggling with focus, coordination, or emotional regulation without realizing that Retained Primitive Reflexes might be the hidden hurdle. These are automatic movements we are born with that should "integrate" as we grow. When they stay active, they can interfere with daily life.

Have you noticed these signs?

The Moro Reflex (Startle): Is your child overly sensitive to light/sound, or often in "fight or flight" mode?

The ATNR (Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex): Does your child struggle with handwriting, crossing the midline, or tracking words on a page?

The Spinal Galant Reflex: Does your child have "ants in their pants," struggle to sit still, or have a history of bedwetting?

Let’s unlock their potential together.

At NDT Inishowen, I provide specialized Neurodevelopmental Therapy to help integrate these reflexes, calming the nervous system and making learning and life a little bit easier for your child.
