In recent weeks, I have become very aware of my own experiences of social media use and how these apps can pull us in for long periods of time, scrolling!

I’ve noticed my own behavior on social media and noticed how it makes me feel. Sluggish, unproductive and sometimes ‘not enough’ as comparison culture can come in depending on the content I am seeing. There can also be times when I am targeted by adds and I am convinced that I need to buy something. Lucky I can recognise these thoughts as untrue and unhelpful, especially because I am an adult with a fully developed brain. 🧠

So what have I done to target my own undesirable use of these apps:

📱 App time limitations - I have a timer set on Instagram for 15minutes a day.
📱 I have turned off notifications on all social media apps that do not require my immediate attention.
📱 I have removed apps from my home screen so I do not automatically tap into them (out of habit or boredom), when I open my phone.
📱 I have set a social media shut down time on my phone. All social media apps and work apps time out at the 10pm so that I can have a least an hour phone free before I sleep at around 11pm.

Please comment below if you find this helpful. Let’s keep the discussion going on this topic. This is one of the positive uses of social media. Let’s use it to our advantage. 📱♥️

📱Are you aware of the impacts of Smartphones & Social Media ?

Recent studies have shown significant increases in children’s mental health difficulties, anxiety depression, sleep deprivation, attention difficulties, self-harm, suicidal ideation and su***de. This is not a coincidence, the world has changed and it is this generation of parents who are left trying to figure it out and fight for their children’s right for a childhood.
Parents are constantly against the pressures of this “new norm” but what we have lacked is research to tell us the devastating impact of this new norm. Now we have it and it’s time to make significant changes to this “norm”.

MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎄

A special note of thanks to all the children, parents, and supervisees who come through my door each week. I am incredibly grateful to you all for trusting my services over the past number of years. I couldn’t be more proud of the children who show up and share their stories with me. You are all amazing ♥️

Parenting Monaghan are delighted to invite Dr Mary O'Kane to Monaghan to have a chat with parents on 'School based anxiety'.

All children worry at times, but for some children, it can be a real challenge to manage their anxieties. As parents, when your child is anxious it can be difficult to know how best to support them.
However, parents play an important role in helping their child to both understand and to manage their anxiety. You don’t want to belittle the child’s feelings, but you also don’t want to amplify them.
In this talk Dr Mary O’Kane explains anxiety in children and offers parents practical advice on how to support their children during difficult times, helping them to manage their fears and gain confidence.

Dr Mary O’Kane is a Lecturer in Psychology, Early Childhood Studies and Education. She continues to work with Today FM, now on the Alison Curtis Weekend Morning show.
Mary is also a regular contributor on Ireland AM discussing a broad range of parenting and childhood issues while responding to viewers parenting queries. Mary is known for her warm and engaging manner and has a natural ability to connect with parents.

Taking place on Monday 1st December at 6.30pm
In the Peace Campus, Monaghan.

Booking essential!
Contact Nadine to book your place.
This talk is FREE to attend as it is funded by Parenting Monaghan.

Happy International Women’s Day 🤎

Today is a time to celebrate and appreciate the incredible women in our lives!

This year, I’m grateful to have Nicole and Eimear join me at Find Your Space. Both are highly educated, self-employed therapists who share my mission of supporting families and children through Play Therapy and Occupational Therapy. Their dedication and expertise make a meaningful difference in the lives of so many.

A special thank you to the many mothers who have reached out to my service since the very beginning in 2020. Your commitment to finding the best support and guidance for your children is truly inspiring.

And of course, I can’t end this post without acknowledging my own mother. She is the heart behind so much of what happens at Find Your Space Play Therapy—helping with day-to-day tasks, tidying up, shopping for resources, gardening, decorating for special occasions, and so much more. Her support means the world to me.
(And you too Dad 🤣♥️)

Wishing all the amazing women out there a wonderful International Women’s Day!
